Page 8 Slide 3: When were olden day houses built? We are finding out about houses that were built about 100 years ago. By Jamie Slide 4: What were the lights like in olden day houses? In the olden days the houses didn’t have power so they couldn’t turn on a switch for light. They used candles and lamps for lights. By Jamie Slide 5: What did they build olden day houses of? By Olivia Some olden day houses are made out of wood and have straw on the roof. They are called thatched roofs. Slide 6: What kind of rooms did they have in olden day houses? By Olivia Some rooms in olden day houses were a hallway, kitchen, bedroom, and a parlour. Slide 7: What is a parlour? By Olivia A parlour is an olden day lounge. People that came to visit liked it because it was the nicest room in the house. They had paintings on the wall and some people had pianos because they had no sing star or a radio to sing and they didn’t have T.V. to watch. Slide 8: Do some people still live in olden day houses? By Olivia Yes lots of people live in olden day houses Eleanor in room 6 lived in a house 300 years old it had a dirt floor and a parlour. It shared walls with the house next door. Slide 9: What were the toilets like in olden day house? By Jamie In the olden days the houses usually didn’t have a toilet inside their houses. It was a deep hole with a wooden seat on top inside a shed at the end of the garden. They used cut up newspaper for toilet paper. Rich people had a fancy decorated toilet inside. Slide 10: What were the bathrooms like in olden day houses? By Jamie In the olden days the houses had no hot water in pipes. They had to heat water over the fire and then pour it into a tin bath that they usually brought into the kitchen. Slide 11: What were kitchens like in the olden day houses? Olden day kitchens were dark because they had no electricity for light. They didn’t have any microwaves or ovens. They had to make their dinner over a stove that had a fire in it.
