Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: Haiti “A broken country” Slide 2: The estimated total cost of the earthquake Is between $7.2 – $13.2 billion with a death toll of 300,000 and 2 million without a home. Some children have been forced to become the supporters of their family. Slide 3: Haiti is a country that requires much aid. Water is available one hour a day, and electricity 10 hours. Infrastructure such as schools, wells, roads, medical care and port facilities are essential in rebuilding Haiti. Slide 4: Haiti’s roads and buildings remain In ruins. The broken roads and unreliable public transit make transportation and rebuilding difficult. Slide 5: Life is rough and unforgiving for the children of Haiti. Some will face a premature death due to malnutrition. With lack of sanitation, proper diet, pharmaceutical products and medical care, it seems very little can be done to help the young Haitians. Slide 6: Aids has become a major problem in Haiti, with over half a million HIV positive. The current health care system is ineffective, especially when diseases such as malaria and cholera infect the population. Slide 7: Cholera has broken out in Haiti. In a few weeks, it has killed 1000 people and left 17,000 hospitalized. It has also caused hostility towards UN peacekeepers. Slide 8: With most of the population experiencing poverty, the life expectancy is 50 years. 90% live on less than $100 a year and 60% are unemployed. Agriculture and fishing have been hurt due to extensive erosion caused by severe storms and deforestation. Slide 9: Haiti’s elections have not been routine and organized. Years of dictatorship and poverty have led Haitians to religion. Political leaders have often taken advantage of the church to influence the people. Slide 10: The Haitian armed forces have helped the government maintain complete power of the people. Infrastructures that could threaten the control of the state have been banned. Slide 11: Lack of access to education in Haiti is a big problem. The country lacks schools, qualified teachers, and teaching material and many parents cannot afford to send their child to school. Many children never learn to read or write. Slide 12: What’s being done to help? Since January 13, 2010, money and support have been given to Haiti. Many people and organizations are doing their best to rebuild Haiti even after the media has left. Slide 13: Numerous people petitioned to get the IMF to drop Haiti’s $270 million debt and succeeded. The IMF was willing to drop the debt as well as lend $62.5 million for reconstruction. Slide 14: Temporary housing is gradually cropping up to get residents out of tents and into stronger and sturdier shelters. Slide 15: The Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA) has been resolving the issue with the displaced and the land owners of the tent cities. Slide 16: CURE has been providing medical aid, trauma counseling and spiritual support for the people of Haiti. They also send patients who require expensive surgeries to the Dominican Republic for medical aid they wouldn’t receive otherwise. Slide 17: WHAT CAN YOU DO? Slide 18: Join the Students Rebuild movement. Create a team to raise money, which will be matched by the Bezos Family, to rebuild schools in Haiti. Slide 19: You can have a garage sale, and donate your proceeds to your organization of choice. Slide 20: Remind everyone you know that Haiti still needs help and support.
