My purpose is to share with you my understanding of how to go about in life. I hope it helps you people. I would like to start with a question. What is a man (I include a woman) known by? Not the obvious. : Not the obvious. Is it his looks, (there are many good looking women in Kullu valley but they are not know)? Is it his money (there are many moneyed business men in Chandni Chowk but they are not known)? The answer is Fragrance: Fragrance A person is known by the indelible imprint that he leaves during his lifetime. How does he leave this imprint? By his deeds. What are these deeds about? For most people these deeds are related to their careers. A large percentage of famous people have become famous only because of their achievements in their careers. Careers are the springboards: Careers are the springboards Think about it, Mother Teressa, Homi Baba, Hargobind Khurana and Ravi Shankar, all were pursuing their careers. Yet they have been great achievers. Someone has rightly pointed out that “If you cannot make history at least try to be a footnote in history”.Nothing special about it!!: Nothing special about it!! You may wonder why I am talking about famous personalities. You may think that "we are not like these great personalities" and “we do not have that kind of background” or that “we are ordinary people – nothing special about us” & that “We are just students”. Also, I admit that this is a time when you would be thinking of marks in your forthcoming examinations and about getting a job thereafter. Silver spoon?: Silver spoon? But firstly, you must realize that not all these people were born in very special families. Amongst all these people Ravi Shankar had rich lineage. All others were people who came from ordinary backgrounds but they worked very hard to achieve what they did.Great deeds: Great deeds Secondly, if these people were also to think that “we are not special” they would never have achieved what they did. Only recently there was the story of the Balia boy Saurabh. My point is that ordinary people can do great deeds. Ordinary people: Ordinary people These great personalities of today were at one time ordinary people. They were also students. They were also faced with the same problems that you have today. The question is whether such problems prevent them from achieving what they did. In fact, a half-century ago jobs and opportunities that they had were very few. Far from the …….: Far from the ……. Still whatever they achieved it was not because they got everything but because they earned it. What is it that distinguished these people from the crowd? I am not sure whether they had good marks, at all. Marks?: Marks? On the other hand I had a very good student in my first batch in 1974. He topped with 64% (in BCom (H) – which was a very high score then) and landed up in his fathers' shop. He achieved nothing although he had good marks. Job and Career: Job and Career So getting marks in your degree or exams is important for getting a good job but it is not so important for making a career. Catch’em young: Catch’em young So what distinguishes the great from the ordinary is that the ordinary does a job the distinguished makes a career by his exemplary achievements. You may wonder that we are too small to even think anything like that. But the truth is that this is the time to start. Not just genes: Not just genes You are young and can mould yourself. You do not have prejudices. You have the energy. Remember that you may get your genes from your parents but it is easy to have good genes at yet not achieve anything. Not a cat!!: Not a cat!! The challenge lies in not having a great lineage and then achieving some thing. Remember you have only one lifetime to achieve. What should you do? Is the question. How can you achieve? PD the key: PD the key You must develop your personality. A personality is not handed down from parents. You may have their genes but you have to build your own personality. You may observe and emulate your parents, elders, teachers, neighbors, but you cannot borrow their personality. You have to build your own. Brand Equity?: Brand Equity? Some amongst you may do great deeds while others may not, but all must strive to achieve something. Even if you cannot achieve great deeds, the gain in terms of a good personality gives a great feeling by itself. You have to distinguish yourself as a person. Distinguishing Deeds: Distinguishing Deeds As I have said, getting marks is not the most important thing. So what is it that makes a good or great personality? You may get a job, earn money, but you would have made a career only when you do so distinguished deeds. Not looks.: Not looks. Lest I should be misunderstood, I am not talking of your looks, height, dress, manner, presence. While all these might be important for personality what I am hinting at is something different. These things can be taught by a finishing school. My concern is different.Think positive: Think positive The key to a great personality is positive thinking. Now I come to the core of my presentation. Now I will share with you some 'mantras' for positive thinking. There are many elements of positive thinking.Definition: Definition There could many ways in which we define positive thinking. A psychologist might have a different definition, a career counselor might have yet another. But I would refrain from defining it. Just go along and imbibe the content. Sometimes definitions are binding. They limit the boundless meanings of a notion.Steal the fire!!: Steal the fire!! You may be a mortal in comparison to the great personalities that I have spoken of but have the zeal and spirit of Prometheus - The Greek hero who stole fire from the gods. No one will give it to you. But how to do it? This is the key - “Elements of Positive Thinking”First “C”: First “C” First, I would speak of the role of criticism. You should not take anything for granted, or at face value. You must scrutinize everything that you observe, you must be critical of others, but once you are critical of others, you must be prepared for similar treatment by them. Initially, you may feel the pinch of such criticism, so you would try to justify your own actions and thinking. Double Edged Weapon: Double Edged Weapon Positive thinking means that you should be able to admit to yourself in hindsight that others were right. You should have the grace to accept your shortcomings. More importantly, you must be prepared to publicly admit your mistakes and failings. This is an insurance against being soft towards yourself. It is an insurance against being dishonest towards yourself. It is an insurance against further mistakes and failures. Right dose is the Prescription!: Right dose is the Prescription! But this is easier said than done. There is an enemy within us, our ego. The problem with our ego is that it works in extremes. We are either over confident and have an exaggerated notion of our abilities, or we suffer from an inferiority complex. So the most difficult task in personality development is to have the right positive thinking that corrects the ego and achieves the proper balance. Feel the prick.: Feel the prick. If we cannot be critical of ourselves, we cannot have the right estimation of ourselves and cannot achieve anything positive. One sure sign of having achieved a self-critical approach is that you do not wait for anyone else to point out you mistakes. You feel uneasy wherever and whenever you have made mistakes or have under-performed.The mellowed flame.: The mellowed flame. This brings us to another element of positive thinking, which is confidence. Most people emphasize self-confidence. An excellent example of self-confidence is that of a naturalist / biologist. She went and slept by the side of a gorilla, in the wild, amongst a herd of gorillas. She had supreme confidence in her knowledge. Not a blaze: Not a blaze She knew that the apes had only heard the sound breaking twigs. So she kept on breaking twigs and befriending the gorillas. This is courage. Courage from knowledge. Thus, courage and confidence are not a blaze they kindle a mellowed flame. All round confidence: All round confidence So no doubt, it is essential to have self-confidence. But let us not forget that man is a social being, so whatever we achieve has an element of contribution from others. If we do not have confidence in others, we cannot attain the highest levels of confidence in ourselves. Confidence and trust: Confidence and trust Earlier we have talked of being critical. Having a critical faculty does not mean being mistrustful. In fact, mistrust is a sign of lack of confidence in oneself. Here of course, we must have the ability to distinguish between blind faith and confidence in others. Blind faith implies being uncritical. Therefore, we must be critical of ourselves and others and at the same time have confidence in ourselves and trust in others. Innovate: Innovate The third aspect is creativity. So we have three “C’s – criticism, confidence and creativity. Once again, you may believe that creativity is an exclusive feature of artists and musicians, but the truth is that anybody could be creative. Even an office peon may have a creative way of storing files. The idea is to be able to think differently. Perfection is creation: Perfection is creation It would be interesting to know that some of the great artists in fact believe that creativity does not have to be inborn. It can arise out of hard work and practice. Late Ustad Bismillah Khan has defined creation as the process of doing things again and again upto a point where you do something new and different. Cool your heels: Cool your heels I would like to emphasize patience as the next element of positive thinking. Most of us may be too small to be able to alter our circumstances. So if you face failure, the best thing to do is to wait for another opportunity patiently and approach it with a positive frame of mind, by putting your failures behind you. So waiting patiently needs a lot of courage. Wait for results: Wait for results Patience should not be confused laziness. How do we know the difference between the two? Waiting without doing anything is dejection and laziness. Here the keyword is inaction. You should be hectically busy doing things and yet be waiting. The yardstick is you must be – waiting for the results!! Not waiting to act.Sagacity: Sagacity Another important element that cannot be over-emphasized is the ability to discern. You should be able to distinguish between the role of circumstances and that of people around you. If you cannot do so, you would land up blaming others around you instead of attributing failure to the circumstances. You would be unhappy and so would others be unhappy. Also, you should be able to discern the difference between genuine praise and sycophancy. Junoon: Junoon One aspect, which is not often emphasized, is obsession. And I give you three examples: There were two UK school teachers who dreamt of learning mountaineering and climbing the Himalayas. When they retired at the age of 65, they came to India with all their life savings and learnt mountaineering and climbed on the mountain Nanda Devi. In spite of: In spite of P.T.Usha – Narottam Puri said that when she was denied b the government to go for the Olympics, she worked on her own and won a medal. She achieved “in spite of her country” not “due to her country”. Results come in years: Results come in years Ph.D. – someone spent 13 years for his Ph.D. So, the lesson is that you must be so obsessed with your goal that you can achieve in spite of all the odds. Change is the order: Change is the order Nothing is given. You must make your own path. The path would have ups and downs. It is beyond our control so we have to adjust to what is in front of us. Adjustment means change. Many people are unable to adjust so they fail. So another element is to be prepared for change. No age too early no age too late to change.Humble: Humble Above all if you do succeed and really achieve some thing; do not forget the most important thing is humility. If you are pompous and go on praising yourself you will undo whatever you have achieved. People will only laugh at you. You will never be liked. It is important to be liked by people. Let others speak of your achievements. You don’t have to speak about them yourself.Go out!: Go out! Finally, if you think that you can achieve things by staidly remaining in a protected shell of self-deception you are mistaken. If you do not want to go out in to the world and face it you cannot achieve things. Some people believe that Vedanta is the route to face the world. It has become fashionable even for top-level managers to join Vedanta classes. I believe that life is the best teacher. You are your Guru: You are your Guru For doing all this you do not need any “Baba” or “Guru”. Be your own guru. The process of learning and change has to be fused. It has to be a self-induced, self-imbibed, self-inculcated and self-driven process. Just do it.: Just do it. So stay here, face the world, do not run away, be truthful to yourself and try to achieve something by positive thinking. I am confident you will succeed. Each one of you! The End!!: The End!! Thank you!! It’s been great talking to you all. Any questions – Shoot!! You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
