HISTORY AND BACKGROUND The network started in 1998 in a classroom and is now global Fact that girls replicate model on their own shows effectiveness of model 400 Years ago Royal Makoni people settled in Rusape –Manicaland, Zimbabwe Brother and sister fought side by side and chieftainship, freedoms and rights were shared between brother and sister- first tribe to declare women equal-positive cultural practice A special and sacred place was reserved for them and known as Chitsotso-firewood and this is where they met as girls after gathering firewood –it gave a choice ,space and voice Community and family is place a girl must turn to before any institution

Who we are ,what we do and why we are unique The organisation/ expertise have emerged out of multiple personal experiences, collectively representing a proven track record that is acknowledged around the world and makes it possible to move seamlessly from the African village to the Global village. Abuse of young girls recognises no borders, cultures, creed or colour. It is all around us, representing massive loss of human potential as well as a gross violation of human rights. Girl Child Network Worldwide is at the centre of a global commitment to gathering, codifying, training and promoting the experiences and expertise of girl advocates

THE SILENT GENOCIDE CAUSED BY FORCED MARRIAGES HIV and AIDS wrecks havoc and 2 million children are orphaned and from being orphaned to being widowed 5000 people die per week-5 plane crashes at Heathrow weekly, bereavement and sexual violence Women life expectancy is 34 because married at 12 10 girls raped daily and myth virgins cure AIDS lead men to have cure via marriages 50 000 girl child headed families exposed to child marriages 80% of rural girls not in school end up married Most children in schools are HIV positive but with no care and support in the school-No drugs for pregnant children :

Empowerment means a process of facilitating, providing and instilling the means :

Empowerment means a process of facilitating, providing and instilling the means Ensure you catch girls whilst young and instil confidence and self assertiveness Instil knowledge and skills on empowerment so that have courage to report potential violence even before it happens Facilitate a situation where girls take charge of themselves and develop a support groups in school, church and community Train girls in life survival skills that transform them from victims to survivors and leaders walking in the fullness of their potential

Strategies to support Empowerment of girls:

Strategies to support Empowerment of girls Girls Empowerment clubs where girls meet weekly to identify problems and deal with them as well as get referral for those at risk Confidence building programs where girls are taken through process of gender based violence Community development and empowerment involving whole communities and families Girls Empowerment centres –safe places for girls to learn and share preventive strategies Speak out and advocacy to law enforcement agents and law makers for girl child friendly laws

Girl EMPOWERMENT CLUBS The girls’ club strategy proved to be most effective strategy in mobilising, nurturing and monitoring girls as it is through the club that the knowledge and skills are imparted to girls at community and school levels. The program takes girls into five stages of empowerment that include needs identification mobilising through clubs to break the silence on rape, HIV and AIDS and other forms of abuse articulating and formulating strategies, confidence building and leadership and active participation as well as community development and empowerment

Girls who are empowered can defend their rights and speak out :

Community Development and Empowerment involve whole communities coming together to develop a culture of prevention so as to less strain services :

Girls Empowerment Villages set up in 2001 :

CHIEFS FROM ROUND ZIMBABWE LAUNCHED THE EMPOWERMENT VILLAGES –RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT GIRLS WAS TAKEN BY TRADITIONAL LEADERS UNLIKE BEFORE WHERE INSTITUTIONS PROTECTED WOMEN AND THERE WAS RESISTANCE Girls Empowerment Villages set up in 2001

Girls Empowerment Villages:

Girls Empowerment Villages Empowerment villages serve as a safe haven for girls in rural communities and those with no access to protection in their homes Offered to 125 girls per month as a rehabilitation center to heal from rape, forced marriages and harmful cultural practices

Who runs them?:

Who runs them? Professional social workers and locally trained women with knowledge on child protection known as girl child monitors Also available to give referral to police, social services and other members of the judicial system Volunteers

Where are they?:

Where are they? There are some 7000 empowerment clubs in Zimbabwe, spread over 35 of Zimbabwe’s 58 districts and served by four girls empowerment villages in Chitungwiza, Chihota, Rusape and Hwange

Why are they relevant?:

Zimbabwe has over 1.5 million orphaned children, 52% of which are girl children and at risk, 10 girls report rape daily in Zimbabwe and treble the number does not A GCN survey showed that of all sexual abuse of children in Zimbabwe, 93% were girls Designed to be responsive to girl children as the most vulnerable entity Community involvement helps sensitive and mitigate –change attitudes, beliefs and practices Formal institutions are not enough to deal with all cases and that’s why family and community remains key
