Keith haring:

Keith haring Mrs. comstock

Who is keith haring?:

Who is keith haring? Keith Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s.

PowerPoint Presentation:

In 1980, Haring noticed the unused advertising panels covered with matte black paper in a subway station in New York. He began to create drawings in white chalk upon these throughout the subway system and these were his first recognized pieces of POP ART.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Between 1980 and 1985, Haring produced hundreds of these public drawings in rapid rhythmic lines, sometimes creating as many as forty “subway drawings” in one day.

PowerPoint Presentation:

This flow of images became familiar to New York commuters, who often would stop to engage the artist when they encountered him at work.

Let’s look at some of keith haring’s artwork.:

We are going to make our own keith haring sculptures.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Procedure: Design simplified figure on paper. I first want you to sketch out a few options to choose from first… after you have approved one with me, you will draw a large version of it for a template on a bigger piece of paper that you will be cutting out to trace on the cardboard. You need to think about the construction of this- how will you get your sculpture to stand? Try to make sure the base of the template is even to create a balanced sculpture.

PowerPoint Presentation:

After you cut out your template, you will trace it onto corrugated cardboard. You will trace and cut two of them. Next you will glue some small cups between the two cut outs. While the glue is drying, I want you to make a Keith Haring Inspired Drawing with markers/colored pencils… be thinking about how you want to paint/design your sculpture. I will be taking this into consideration in your grade. OR- you can begin making a letter sculpture as your enrichment project.

Steps continued::

Steps continued: After the cups have dried, you will moisten kraft packing tape to activate its glue and wrap the sculpture – You will cut the strips thinner to wrap around the curved parts. Paint with gesso when dry. This will serve as a primer. Next you will paint the piece with acrylics. Select a contrasting color for lining and symbols. Paint a thin border around shape and fill in with personal symbols to show "self". Fill in negative spaces with line and pattern. Allow to dry. We will have a showing of these when they are finished.

Additional options::

Additional options: IF you choose a pose IS ELABORATE, you can partner up with someone WITH MY APPROVAL AFTER YOU DEVELOP AN IDEA THAT MAKES SENSE TO COLLABORATE WITH SOMEONE ON. EXAMPLES:

YOU CAN DO a “RELIEF” ON THE front of your SCULPTURE too. What do you think a relief is on a sculpture?:

YOU CAN DO a “RELIEF” ON THE front of your SCULPTURE too. What do you think a relief is on a sculpture? A “RELIEF” SCULPTURE IS JUST SOMETHING THAT IS LAYERED “IN” OR “OUT” ON A SURFACE.

What’s an example of relief on keith haring sculptures?:

What’s an example of relief on keith haring sculptures? FOR EXAMPLE, ON THE IPOD, YOU COULD USE ANOTHER PIECE OF CARDBOARD AS A LAYER THAT STICKS OUT FOR THE “DIAL” AND FOR THE “DOG” ON THE SCREEN.

So today you will work on the following steps::
