Surrealism Compositions Incorporating Architectural Components & Perspective Techniques

What is Surreal Art?:

What is Surreal Art?

Surreal Art is…:

Surreal Art is… A 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind . Key Points : Surrealist works feature element of surprise unexpected JUXTAPOSITION : Juxtaposition is the act or placement of two things (usually abstract concepts) near each other . A non sequitur : a conversational and literary device, often used for comedic purposes. It is something said that, because of its apparent lack of meaning relative to what preceded it seems absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing . What elements of Surreal Art can be seen here?:

What elements of Surreal Art can be seen here? Salvador Dali In this image you can see Unexpected Juxtaposition . Liquid shapes became the trademark of Dalí , particularly in his The Persistence of Memory, which features the image of watches that sag as if they were melting.

What brought about Surrealism?:

World War I scattered the writers and artists who had been based in Paris, and in the interim many became involved with Dada, who believed that excessive rational thought and bourgeois values (1 . Of, relating to, or typical of the middle class . 2 . Held to be preoccupied with respectability and material values .) had brought the conflict of the war upon the world. The Dadaists protested with anti-art gatherings, performances, writings and art works. After the war, when they returned to Paris, the Dada activities continued. Many Dadaists believed that the 'reason' and 'logic' of bourgeois capitalist society had led people into war. Their artistic expression appeared to reject logic and embrace chaos and irrationality. What brought about Surrealism?

In response to this…:

In response to this… Back in Paris, Breton joined in Dada activities and started the literary journal Littérature along with Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault . They began experimenting with automatic writing—spontaneously writing without censoring their thoughts—and published the writings, as well as accounts of dreams, in the magazine. Breton and Soupault delved deeper into automatism and wrote The Magnetic Fields (1920). Continuing to write, they attracted more artists and writers; they came to believe that automatism was a better tactic for societal change than the Dada attack on prevailing values. It was believed that Surrealism would advocate the idea that ordinary and depictive expressions are vital and important, but that the sense of their arrangement must be open to the full range of imagination

PowerPoint Presentation:

During this time, Freud's work with free association, dream analysis, and the unconscious was of utmost importance to the Surrealists in developing methods to liberate imagination. They embraced idiosyncrasy, while rejecting the idea of an underlying madness. Later, Salvador Dalí explained it as: "There is only one difference between a madman and me. I am not mad."[2]

Our Objectives::

Our Objectives: Create a setting based on a real place form a historical or exotic setting Create a space rendered with linear perspective that demonstrates foreground, middleground , and background Show a unique viewpoint- either bird’s eye view or worm’s eye view Show light source in your drawing- (you can incorporate reflective/transparent sources) Include surreal components Create an asymmetric composition that leads your eye around the composition Have value gradations blend from dark to light

I want you to explore the idea of incorporating a unique or exotic setting with some architectural references:
