Twitter Lingo:

Twitter Lingo tweet - an update on Twitter. Can be seen by everyone who follows you. direct message (DM)- a private message sent between people that follow each other reply - these are "@" messages directed at someone in particular. They can be seen by the person you send them to as well as the people that follow both you and the person you sent the message to. hashtag - A word embedded in a tweet that allows conversations to be aggregated. Examples: # edchat # cpchat #wnccsm

Direct Message aka DM:

Direct Message aka DM You can only "DM" someone who if you are following them and they are following you. DM's are used when you want to have a private conversation with someone. To send a DM simply place the letter D at the beginning of the tweet then the person's Twitter name. Example: D bethstill

Replies aka “@” messages:

Replies aka “@” messages Special Note: @ messages will only be seen by your followers who are also following the person you send the message to. The exception to this is if you place a "." in front of their name. Replies are used to send a message to someone that you wish to address directly, but not privately. It is perfectly acceptable to jump into a conversation that is taking place between people who are sending "@" messages to each other.

Hash Tags:

Hash Tags A word or words preceded by the "#" sign Help aggregate and filter conversations. Common hash tags: # edchat # teachertuesday # followfriday # google Twitter is a micro blog---many people use hash tags when they are tweeting notes from various conferences Consistency is essential with hash tags. To search for hash tags type the hash tag into the search box on your Twitter page. Try #wnccsm and see what you come up with.

Task Four SEND AN “@” MESSAGE Pick someone from class and send an “at” message to them. Remember that when you message someone in this manner you must include the @ symbol in front of their name. Example: @michellek107 How was the concert last night?

Task Five SEND A MESSAGE WITH A HASHTAG Hash tags help make tweets searchable. Hash tags can be useful or funny. #wnccsm is the official hash tag for this class Send a tweet using this hash tag….maybe something like Learning about Twitter with @bethstill. #wnccsm

Task Six SEND A DIRECT MESSAGE A person must be following you in order for you to send them a DM. Create a “friendship” with someone on class and DM them. To send a DM place an upper case D at the beginning of the message followed by a space followed by the message. Example: D gcouros What time will you be at the airport?

Diigo Sticky Notes Sticky notes can be used for an infinite variety of reasons. You can create sticky notes that people in a group can see.
