POP A generic convention of pop music videos is the use of close ups to make the audience engage with the artist. Close ups are the most common shot type in pop videos and it is used to make the video feel personal and intimate with the viewer. It also accentuates the celebrity’s beautifully stylised appearance. Pop videos use many bright colours such as pink and blue to excite the viewer as a connotation of the pop genre is that everything is happy and perfect. Little Mix - DNA Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball

POP Most pop videos also include a story to engage the viewer and to also link with the lyrics of the song. Many pop videos from big stars have high budgets, so there are some special effects used. The record labels know that if they spend enough money on the video for a song, it will create a big buzz and the sales will be high. Katy Perry - Roar

ROCK The most common shot type in rock videos is a mid-shot of the band playing their instruments, this is used to make the audience build a closer relationship to the artist, but it isn't too intimate. Long shots are also very common too as it shows the band altogether playing their instruments. Rock music is well known for being better when it’s live; this is why in videos there is a lot of performing to the camera whilst playing the music together. You Me At Six - Bite My Tongue 30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill (Bury Me)

ROCK 30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill (Bury Me) There are darker colours used in rock videos as stereotypically, males like the rock genre. Mostly blacks and reds are used in the video, which is the complete opposite to pop videos. This is because a connotation of the rock genre is being rebellious and manly; these dark colours convey this. Also, their unstylised clothing shows the audience that they are more focused on the music than how they look.

FOLK I found folk music videos to be very different. They either focused all on performing, or all on a story. With performance videos, the most common shot type was a long shot as it showed the band performing together and really enjoying it. The long shots also showed unity within the band. There were also many close ups used of the band playing their instruments; it gave the audience a sense of the skill involved in creating the music. Mumford and Sons - Hopeless Wanderer

FOLK The Lumineers - Stubborn Love In the narrative focused videos, I found them to be quite personal and intimate with the viewer. Lots of close ups were used as an emotional story was portrayed. This was used to really connect with the viewer and make them think about what they are seeing, and maybe even affect them emotionally. Also the settings of the music video were generic as they were realistic, natural and almost earthy environments.

HIP-HOP Hip-hop was the last genre of music video I looked at. The most common shot type in the videos was a mid-shot. This was used to show off the artist’s clothing as a generic convention of hip-hop is their urban style outfits and expensive jewellery. A denotation of hip-hop is wealth and this is shown in the videos through their fashionable but expensive clothes and the settings of their videos; either in large mansions or clubs. A connotation of this is wealth and success. The videos also included a lot of performance such as dancing and singing directly to the camera, this shows how important the artists’ performance is. Eminem - Berzerk Chris Brown - Fine China
