Measures of ecological patency on River Lieser and Moselle:

Measures of ecological patency on River Lieser and Moselle

Structure:

Structure Project at river “Lieser“ Conversion of weirs Fish pass Rock ramp Barrage near “Koblenz“ Reason for water management Water management office Fields of activity

Project at river “Lieser“:

Project at river “Lieser“ “Lieser“ 74 km long flows into “Mosel“ project conversion or removal of 16 weirs building of fish passes and rock ramps

Field trip to the River Lieser in cooperation with the Water Management Authorities of Rhineland-Palatinate :

Field trip to the River Lieser in cooperation with the Water Management Authorities of Rhineland -Palatinate Along the River Lieser there were 15 barrages (weirs) to supply water energy to the mills  fish and other aquatic organisms could not move upstream.

Weir before conversion :

Weir before conversion weir 50 m long 2.20 m high inefficient fish pass 5 m long

Construction of fish pass:

Construction of fish pass fish pass 42.50 m long 17 small dams of regular length fall step between dams 10 cm series of small dams

After conversion with fish pass:

After conversion with fish pass

Weir before conversion:

Weir before conversion 1.70 m

Construction of rock ramp:

Construction of rock ramp rock ramp 47 m long large rocks (2.50 t) system of rocks (so they don´t move in case of floodings )

After conversion:

After conversion

The barrage near “Koblenz“ :

The barrage near “Koblenz“ 3 locks hydroelectric power plant fish pass “Mosel“

Slide 12:

hydroelectric power plant 4 turbines produce 62 mio . kWh yearly

Fish pass:

Fish pass

Ecological patency:

Ecological patency fish way to pass around the barrage fish migration counting station and fish trap Salmon migrates long distances to spawn

Safe Drinking Water:

Safe Drinking Water Clean drinking water is a basic human needs One in six people still lack reliable access Earth´s population still growing Greater cities = bigger water pollution

Water is a precious resource :

Water is a precious resource Water shortage exist -> water management needed Water management involves principles for the careful use of water protection and pollution control in all waters maintenance and improvement of the ecological condition of streams and rivers sustainable use of water resources

Water management office :

Water management office Main tasks: Water management planning Supervision of waters Administration of public water resources Promotion of water management Preparation of expert reports on the following: water supply, wastewater disposal, water protection, river control, industrial pollution control

Fields of activity :

Fields of activity Quantitative & Qualitative hydrology measure water levels and streamflows investigate the release of substances and chemicals into waters and its impacts Ecology study the ecosystems in and along the federal waterways develop concepts and measures for ecologically compatible waterway (Example: fish pass)
