Premium member Presentation Transcript Venipuncture : Venipuncture Bellerina Venipuncture : Venipuncture Is a procedure use to draw blood from the vein using vacutainer system ( double-pointed needle, a plastic holder or adapter, and a series of vacuum tubes with rubber stoppers of various colors which indicates the type of additive present). Also known as phlebotomy, venesection, blood draw, drawing blood or taking blood. Materials needed : Materials needed Gloves Tourniquet Alcohol wipes Adapter Vacuum tubes Sharps disposal container Gauze or cotton balls Bandages or CoFlex Mask Medical Assistant Responsibilities : Medical Assistant Responsibilities Read the doctors order carefully Set up the tray you’ll be needing to perform the procedure Label the vacuum tubes with the name of the patients, date of collection and initials after a successful blood drawn. Patient Preparation : Patient Preparation Have the patient sit comfortably into the phlebotomy chair. If the patient is wearing long sleeve, have them roll it above the elbow. Ask the patient if they have a history of fainting or dizziness while getting their blood drawn. Venipuncture Site Selection : Venipuncture Site Selection There are certain areas need to be avoided when choosing a site. Avoid extensive scars from burns and surgery-the scar tissue is difficult to puncture and obtain a specimen. Hematoma-this may cause a wrong test results, and if another site is not available, collect the specimen distal to the hematoma. A recent IV site, or the same side of an IV site. Thrombosed vein, this vein is thick and cord-like and tend to roll. Procedure : Procedure Wash your Hand. Identify your patients ( ask their name and date of birth). Assess the patient’s physical disposition ( diet, exercise, stress, basal state). Check the requisition form for requested test, patient information, and any special requirements. Ask the patient if they had the procedure done to them before, if not explain the procedure thoroughly, so they can understand what is going on. Procedure Cont. : Procedure Cont. Look for the best site for venipuncture. Use tourniquet ( 2-3 inches above the site). Palpate and trace the path of the vein with the index finger. Procedure cont. : Procedure cont. Clean the site. Collect the sample in the appropriate container. Pull out the container, take the tourniquet off the patient. Procedure cont. : Procedure cont. Get a gauze or cotton balls, take the needle out of your patient’s arm. Put the needle right away in the Sharp container. Procedure cont. : Procedure cont. Sway the sample 8 times. Put the patient’s name, date of the collection and Initials. Dispose all the contaminated materials, like gauze, cotton balls or band aid in the biohazard waste container. Take off your gloves and wash your hand.
