R.L.A. Questions, in their Order of Difficulty :

2 R.L.A. Questions, in their Order of Difficulty This Study Guide tells you how to work different types of Reading and Language Arts questions. They are presented in their order of difficulty: S.P.C.G. questions (Spelling, Punctuation, Capitalization, Grammar) “Inferential” questions; you must infer or draw a conclusion. These are the hardest comprehension questions. These 3 types of questions are in the middle range of difficulty. easiest hardest Other rule-based questions Revise and Edit questions Literal comprehension questions; the answer is “right there.” These are the easiest comprehension questions.

“S.P.C.G.” Questions = easiest :

3 “S.P.C.G.” Questions = easiest SPELLING PUNCTUATION CAPITALIZATION GRAMMAR

The good news about “S.P.C.G.” Questions :

4 They are relatively easy to master because they follow rules. ? More good news… IF you are not yet good at S.P.C.G. questions, there is still time for you to learn the 4th grade skills and become good at them. Why should you bother getting good at the S.P.C.G. questions? If you can correctly answer the S.P.C.G. questions, it will help protect your overall score in case you don’t perform very well on the more difficult questions. Performing well on the S.P.C.G. questions will help protect your overall score on the whole test. ? ? However, if you do not master the S.P.C.G. skills, and if you also perform badly on the more challenging comprehension questions, then your overall test score will suffer. ? The good news about “S.P.C.G.” Questions

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

5 “S.P.C.G.” Questions S.P.C.G. questions are easy to spot because the answer choices look almost the same. The only difference in the answer choices is related to Spelling, Punctuation, Capitalization or Grammar. In this example, the question tells you to focus on capitalization. Therefore, don’t waste your brain power looking for other types of mistakes. Just focus on capitalization. Capitalization C is correct.

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

6 “S.P.C.G.” Questions S.P.C.G. questions are easy to spot because the answer choices look almost the same. The only difference in the answer choices is related to Spelling, Punctuation, Capitalization or Grammar. In this example, the question does not tell what to focus on. But it is still easy to spot the problem because all of the choices are almost the same except for the apostrophe. To select the correct answer, you must remember that apostrophes have two jobs: (1) they create contractions in verbs, and (2) they show possession. Sentence 12 contains a contraction, and the apostrophe replaces the letter that dropped out. That is = That’s A is correct. Apostrophes: Contractions vs. Possession

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

7 “S.P.C.G.” Questions S.P.C.G. questions are easy to spot because the answer choices look almost the same. The only difference in the answer choices is related to Spelling, Punctuation, Capitalization or Grammar. #79 is a grammar question. It tests your knowledge of verbs that are irregular in the past tense. In the present tense, the verb is “bring.” In the past tense, it is “brought,” not “bringed.” #82 is a spelling question. It is also a “NOT” question. Take out the “not” and read the question: Which word from the report is spelled correctly? Now it’s easier to identify the answer that is NOT spelled correctly. D is correct Verbs that are irregular in the past tense Spelling

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

8 “S.P.C.G.” Questions #84 is a punctuation question. It tests your knowledge of how to write the name of a book title. This question asks you to focus on punctuation. Then you notice that it is punctuation in a quotation. A is correct. Book titles Quotations 90

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

9 “S.P.C.G.” Questions Question #100 is different from the previous quotation question because the narrative text (“said the ranger”) is located in the middle of the sentence (not at the beginning or the end). D is correct. In addition to spotting the correct punctuation, look at the letter “m” in “more.” It is NOT capitalized because it is a continuation of the first part of the sentence that begins “In spite of….” Another type of Quotation challenge

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

10 “S.P.C.G.” Questions This question tells you to focus on the verb tense. The sentence in the box contains a main verb (looked) and a helping verb (had). Without even reading the paragraph to determine the verb tense, you can cross out choices B and C because they are just crazy wrong. Try reading the sentence using B and C. You know that neither choice works! NOW go the passage to figure out the verb tense of the paragraph, and match it to choice A (past) or D (present). Verb tense

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

11 “S.P.C.G.” Questions This question tells you to focus on the verb tense. Look at the other verb in the sentence; it tells you what the verb tense is. Match it to the answers. The verb “protects” is in the present tense, so “surrounded” needs to be in the present tense, too. NOW look at the subject of the sentence, and select the answer that results in subject-verb agreement. The subject is “bark” (singular), so the correct answer is C. You can cross out choices B and D because they are just crazy wrong; B is past tense and D is future tense. Verb tense and subject-verb agreement

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

12 “S.P.C.G.” Questions Question #109 focuses on the conjunction in the sentence. Which conjunction is correct: and, or, but or so? C is correct. Conjunctions

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

13 “S.P.C.G.” Questions Question #112 is more advanced because it focuses on REVISING & EDITING, as well as your knowledge of how to punctuate appositives. C is correct. The phrase “the Eagles” must be separated from the rest of the sentence by two commas because it describes the soccer team. It is a special phrase called an appositive. For more information, click the link below: Choice A is crazy wrong because it is two independent clauses (simple sentences), which cannot be punctuated by a comma. Notice that choices B and D are very similar to C, but they do not have the correct number of commas. Appositives http://www.chompchomp.com/terms/appositive.htm

“S.P.C.G.” Questions :

14 “S.P.C.G.” Questions How to Punctuate Compound and Complex Sentences A compound sentence contains two simple sentences joined by a conjunction. A comma must be placed before the conjunction. A complex sentence contains a dependent clause and an independent clause. The correct punctuation depends upon which clause is written first. I rode my bicycle to school, and I parked it at the door.

16 Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions This question is an example of an easy Revise and Edit for someone that grew up with English. It is more challenging for someone that is still learning to speak and write English. B is the only choice that is not incorrect or awkward.

Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions :

17 This question is more difficult than the previous one because you must combine two sentences into one. It’s still a fairly easy question. You can eliminate A because it joins 2 simple sentences with a comma (not allowed!). And you can eliminate D because it is missing a conjunction to join the 2 sentences. The correct conjunction is “and,” so B is the correct choice. Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions :

18 This question also asks you to combine two sentences into one. It’s more challenging. You can eliminate C and D because C is actually two simple sentences joined with a comma (not allowed!), and D is missing a conjunction to connect the two ideas. A and B are similar, except that B is missing a conjunction, too. Therefore, A is the correct choice because it includes the conjunction “and” to connect the cones to the rest of the sentence. trunks leaves cones Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

19 Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions 106 This question requires you to pick the correct conjunction. “yet” means “but” and indicates that there is something about the first part of the description that does not apply to the second part. “because” signals cause and effect “so” also signals cause and effect “and” simply connects two facts that are not related to each other. D is correct because the body covering has nothing to do with the shape of the legs.

20 This question is another one that tests your understanding of the meaning of different conjunctions. “or” signals a choice between 2 things. “and” connects two facts that are not logically related to each other. C is the correct answer: Humans don’t live there, but some humans (scientists) do visit there. “but” signals that there is some logic about the first part of the description that does not apply to the second part. Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions :

21 This question is a rule-based question. The rules are: (1) Compound sentences consist of 2 simple sentences joined by a conjunction. (2) There will be a comma located before the conjunction. D is the only answer that follows the rules for compound sentences. Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

22 D is correct. As we discussed in class…. A dictionary provides definitions. An atlas contains maps. A thesaurus contains synonyms and sometimes antonyms. An encyclopedia is a large set of books that contains detailed information about many subjects. An encyclopedia is like a printed version of “wikipedia.” Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

23 D is correct. From the passage, you know that the climbing perch fish was discovered long ago, so you can eliminate A and B because they contain recent information. C is just crazy wrong. Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions :

24 All of these things are found in a dictionary. You need to pick the one that helps you find the underlined word in the dictionary. B is the answer because “guide words” are the words that appear at the top of each page in the dictionary. They indicate the first word and the last word to appear on that page of the dictionary. 25 You’ll know the answer to this question if you think of any other fact-based reference book. The “glossary” is where you’d look to find the meaning of orienteering. (If “glossary” hadn’t been a choice, the next best choice would have been “index.”) B is correct. Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions

Other Rule-based QuestionsRevise and Edit QuestionsLiteral Comprehension Questions :

26 This question is outdated because Timothy would probably sell his bicycle on www.craigslist.com instead of the local newspaper. ? Newspapers have different sections in them. If Timothy wants to sell his bike in the local paper, he needs to put an advertisement in the paper. The word “ad” is an abbreviation for advertisement, so the Classified Ads would be the place where he would look to find examples of others ads. (Classified just means that the ads are separated, or classified, according to the items being sold. All cars are listed together, all bikes are listed together, etc.) B is correct. Inferential Questions = hardest :

27 Inferential Questions = hardest

Inferential Questions :

28 Inferential Questions You can use “context clues” to help you figure out the answer to this question, but it is still a challenging question. The phrase, “we also carry…” describes other products that the store sells. Therefore, “flutes are our specialty” must describe the main product that the store sells. A is correct.

Inferential Questions :

29 Inferential Questions Opinion versus Fact fact fact fact opinion A is correct. (You don’t even need to read Sample B to figure out this answer!)

Inferential Questions :

30 Inferential Questions Most questions that ask “why” have an answer that must be inferred. Go back to the passage and locate where Annika mentions the clocks. Re-read that part of the passage and ask yourself if there’s a reason that’s not stated in the passage to explain why Annika might mention the clocks.

Inferential Questions :

31 Inferential Questions This question tests your knowledge of topic sentences. Read the question carefully, and focus on what it asks you. The main idea of A: the large amount of supplies. The main idea of B: contests. The main idea of C: the many places for orienteering. The main idea of D: safety rules. C is the only answer that contains the main idea stated in the question.

Inferential Questions :

32 Inferential Questions You need to remember that a conclusion summarizes the main ideas of the passage. The passage focuses on various aspects of Death Valley, so you can eliminate B because it only includes the heat and the animals and plants. C and D describe ideas that are not even contained in the passage. A is the correct answer because it states what all of the ideas in the passage state if you added them all up.

Inferential Questions :

33 Inferential Questions You have to read all of the answer choices and select the one that has a scientific purpose. Answering this question correctly requires you to draw a conclusion. You can eliminate B and D because they don’t relate to science. Look at A and C. Which one seems to be mostly about science? C is the correct choice.

Inferential Questions :

34 Inferential Questions The answer to this question is almost “right there” in the first paragraph, which is shown below. There are many hints to the correct answer! C is the correct answer. penguins cassowaries

Inferential Questions :

35 Inferential Questions Look at the answer choices. There is only one choice that doesn’t relate to the museum in Toronto. C is the correct answer because it doesn’t relate to the museum in Toronto. The question tells you to focus on one museum. Then it asks you to find the answer choice that doesn’t relate to this one museum (“except”).

Summary :

36 Summary You’ll do your best if you can identify the questions on the test. Nearly all of the questions will fit into one of the categories below. If you can identify the type of question, then you’ll know how to approach it and save your brain power!
