Week 12: Pronouns -subject -object -possessive

What are pronouns?: 

What are pronouns? A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun . We use pronouns a lot in English so that we don’t have to keep repeating the noun. Example: Maria is a really good friend. She is honest, trustworthy and kind. SHE replaces MARIA.

Subject Pronouns: 

Subject Pronouns Subject pronouns function as the subject of a sentence or clause. Forms: I you we they he she it

Examples of subject pronouns:: 

Examples of subject pronouns: 1) She loves to cook. *She is in the subject position— it comes before the verb. 2) I love San Diego because IT has very nice weather. *This sentence has 2 clauses: I is the subject of the first clause IT is the subject of the second clause.

Remember . . . : 

Remember . . . The grammar rule we learned this semester: AFTER “because” or “I think,” you need a subject—usually this is a subject pronoun. I love San Diego because is beautiful. it

Object Pronouns: 

Object Pronouns Object pronouns function as the object of a sentence or clause. Objects are the part of the sentence or clause that receive the action . Forms: you us them him her me it

Examples of object pronouns:: 

Examples of object pronouns: 1) He bought a new TV . *Object = a new TV He bought IT yesterday. * IT = object pronoun 2) She told ME a secret. *Object = ME *Notice that the object pronouns come AFTER the verb , not before.

Object Pronouns:: 

Object Pronouns: Object pronouns are also used AFTER a preposition: Examples: 1) She went to the movies with HIM . 2) I gave the keys to HER . 3) We left after THEM .

Review:: 

Review: Subject pronouns come before the verb . Object pronouns come after the verb ; they are also used after prepositions . Tom and his wife bought a new house. THEY bought IT . VERB SUBJECT OBJECT Subject pronoun Object pronoun

Possessive: 

Possessive Part 1: Possessive adjectives *These are always followed by a noun to show possession. Forms: your our their his her my its

Examples of possessive adjectives:: 

Examples of possessive adjectives: 1) Did you see my new car? *MY is followed by NEW CAR (noun). 2) Sally finished her essay yesterday. *HER is followed by ESSAY(noun).

Possessive: 

Possessive Part 2: Possessive pronouns *These are NOT followed by a noun. Forms: yours ours theirs his hers mine its

Examples of possessive pronouns:: 

Examples of possessive pronouns: 1) This car is MINE . *MINE = My car 2) My house is small. YOURS is big. *YOURS = your house

Notice that possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns have the same function, but their grammar is different. :
