Week 7 Grammar Rules

Rule #1: : 

Rule #1: too vs. so Many ESL students use TOO (as an adverb) incorrectly. more explanation...

Slide 3: 

In English, we use " too " + an adjective to express a negative or undesired situation . When we use " too ," we are usually complaining about something . We are saying it’s to a degree that we don’t like! Consider the following examples: TOO in English is similar to “ demasiado ” in Spanish.

Slide 4: 

Some students don’t like Mrs. Jones because they think she is too strict . Meaning: She is stricter than they’d like. This is a NEGATIVE OPINION.

Slide 5: 

It’s too cold to go outside. Let’s stay home and watch movies. Meaning: It’s colder than we’d like. This is a NEGATIVE OPINION. We are complaining .

Slide 6: 

DO NOT use too when expressing a positive opinion. Instead, use “so” or “very.’ Example: I love my Science class. I have learned too much! I have learned so/very much! Incorrect! NOW Correct!

They loved the movie. It was too funny! It was so funny. It was very funny.

Slide 8: 

Note: It is possible to use SO or VERY in both positive and negative situations. That car is too expensive. That car is so expensive. However: don’t use TOO in a positive situation. Both okay!

In English, “ do " is usually used with actions or activities. Do can be especially confusing because it also an auxiliary . For example: “What do you want to do today? The 1 st DO is auxiliary—used in Present Tense Questions The 2 nd DO is a VERB related to an activity

In English, “ make " is usually used when there is a product or result . It means to produce, construct, create, or cause some result. examples...

Common Expressions with MAKE: : 

Common Expressions with MAKE : Make dinner (lunch, breakfast) Make a particular food item Make the bed Make a decision Make plans Make a mess Make a decision (not “take!”) Make an appointment Make money (=earn money)
