Watersheds and HMS’s results from Pettibone Creek :

Watersheds and HMS’s results from Pettibone Creek By: Mike Belliston, Travis Knapp, Clinton Caddell, and Elliott Jenks

Our phosphate score was 2 ppm :

Our phosphate score was 2 ppm Phosphate is a salt composed of the most highly oxidized acid of phosphorus and forms an important and extensive series of compounds. Our Phosphate score was 2. This is good The Excellent score is 1. This means that we could do better with phosphate in the water

Our pH score was 7 :

Our pH score was 7 pH (short for potential for hydrogen ion concentration) is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. 7 is a safe number, 1 is very acidic and 14 is very basic. Our group got 7 pH which means that the water was suitable for all life. Ways to get a better pH level. Don’t dump detergent down the drain, or anything with a very high or very low pH level. Macroinvertebrates - Organisms without a backbone, generally visible to the naked eye Our group found 19 macroinvertebrate which was an okay result The only way to get more macroinvertebates is to clean up the water quality.

Our nitrate score was 1ppm :

Our nitrate score was 1ppm Nitrates Nitrate is a compound that is formed when nitrogen combines with oxygen. Nitrogen is needed for all living things, but high levels of nitrate in drinking water can be dangerous to health. Nitrates are also made in large amounts by plants and animals, and are released in smoke and industrial or automotive exhaust. Our nitrate score was 1 ppm which is excellent. There is little improvements that would need to be made. This is very good for our community.

Our Dissolved oxygen score was 4ppm :

Our Dissolved oxygen score was 4ppm Dissolved Oxygen – oxygen saturation or dissolved oxygen is a relative measure of the amount of oxygen that is dissolved or carried in. Our Dissolved Oxygen score was 71% that is good. The Excellent score is 91-110%. Our school is lower because in the hotter months aquatic animals need to support their bodies more than normal so they require more oxygen to support themselves

Litter :

Litter We found a lot of litter at Pettibone Creek. We found 50 + litter. This is poor, meaning that we really need to work on not throwing any trash on the ground. By polluting the environment we can end up killing animals and make it harder for them to live.
