Mixture Problems! :

Mixture Problems! Before you watch: Be fluent in solving linear equations and read Chapter 2.7.

General Recipe :

General Recipe Overall Approach: Read the question carefully! Define needed variable(s). As few variables as possible! Extract the information from words into a table, then into an equation. Solve the equation. Check work for reasonability.

Problem Statement :

Problem Statement Is Wiley doing money laundering? Wiley invested some money into Fund A for one year. Wiley invested $3000 more than that amount in Fund B, also for one year. Fund A gave 18% (simple) interest for the year. Fund B gave 15% (simple) interest for the year. Total from interest: $3750. Our goal: Find how much Wiley invested in each fund!

Start organizing information :

Start organizing information Last Chapter we introduced defining variables and writing expressions. Let x = the amount of money invested in Fund A. (Writing that down was not optional!) Remember $3000 more was invested in Fund B. What is an expression for how much was invested in Fund B? Usually we’ll need an expression involving the variable as well as the variable itself! x+3000 Summarizing so far x invested in Fund A x + 3000 in Fund B

Organizing - Put into a table :

Organizing - Put into a table Let’s fill in a table to organize all this information! Wiley invested x into Fund A. Wiley invested x + 3000 into Fund B. Fund A gave 18% interest. Fund B gave 15% interest. Total from interest: $3750.

Summary :

Summary $10,000 invested into Fund A, and $13,000 invested into Fund B. This answers all parts of the questions too! Overall Approach: Defined needed variables. Extracted the information from words into a table. Extracted the equation from the table. Solved the equation. Checked work for reasonability. (Based on 2.7, #15, pg 142).
