Both of her parents are from Nigeria. She is attending OSU Newark. She is wearing a Nigerian outfit. It is a skirt and blouse, the skirt and blouse are made out of lace. In Nigeria, this is a formal outfit that is worn to special occasions like weddings, naming ceremonies, and other formal gatherings. To complete the outfit a woman can wear a head tie called a Gele. What she is wearing is an Aso oke (asha o.k.), material wrap around her head. Kalkidan Ayalew - Ethiopia Kaklidan Ayalew from Ethiopia attending OSU Newark, she is wearing formal clothing. It can be worn at weddings, church or parties. This clothing can be worn anywhere really, but this particular dress is actually for more special occasions. There are other dresses similar to this one that are both formal and informal, Marian Abrokwa – GhanaMarian is from Ghana attending OSU Newark. She is wearing a Kente dress from Ghana, a traditional dress that is worn to formal gatherings. This is dress that has many, many colors to that is indialso a mixed colored dress with green, yellow, blue, purple, etc Slide 58: Marian Abrokwa –GhanaMarian is from Ghana and attending OSU Newark. Marian is wearing a Kente dress from Ghana, a traditional dress that is formal wear. Her dress is usually worn to formal gatherings, such church and other formal social events. The colors are a multi-colored with greens, yellows, blues, and purples. Pearl Anyang- GhanaPearl is from Ghana, she is a 1st year Freshman attending OSU Newark. She came to the U.S. in 2004. Pearl is wearing a Ghanian traditional cloth. Ghanians wear these outfits on important occasions such as weddings, engagements and church functions. The outfit is a multi-colored outfit mixed with yellow, blue, orange, black and white. Because it’s a formal wear, you would never wear this outfit around the house doing chores. Mary Oppong - Ghana She came to the US in 2004. She is a 1st year freshman attending OSU Newark. Mary is wearing a three piece Ghanian outfit. Her ensemble is a blouse, a skirt, and a shawl. The shawl can also be used as a scarf. This is mostly a traditional outfit worn a church gatherings and other formal functions. Slide 59: Quartez Harris - U.S.Quartez is a US born citizen attending OSU Newark. He is a student by day and a poet by night. He is representing the US by wearing a blue, white and gray buttoned up shirt, gray sweater vest accented with a blue necktie, and gray skinny jeans. Take a look at his shoes, he is wearing blue and white classic K-Swiss. This outfit was purchased in Queens, New York Quartez Harris- U.S.Quartez is representing the US wearing a casual outfit. He is a 1st year freshmen majoring in special education and enjoys styling. He is wearing a burgundy and black buttoned up shirt, black cardigan sweater, black necktie with black skinny jeans. Check out the burgundy and black Nike shoes. In his senior year of high school, he won best dressed. Miranda Brooks – EritreaMiranda was born in the US. She is attending OSU Newark. Her outfit is from Eritrea. It is a Zur-e-ah and the colors are blue and silver. It is a traditional dress worn at celebratory events such as graduation parties and other celebrations. Slide 60: Miranda Brooks – EritreaMiranda has returned her outfit is from Eritrea. She is wearing a traditional outfit that yellow, blue and green. The outfit is worn on more formal occasions such as holidays, weddings and other special events Marta Tewolde - Eritrea Marta is a first generation US American born citizen. Her parents are both from Eritrea. She is representing Eritrea wearing a Zur-e-ah. This is a traditional dress that usually ankle length. The design goes from around the neckline and straight the center. The second piece is know as She-Fan. It is used to cover the head and shoulders. Do to the demands of fashion. Slide 61: DJ Shivers - Kenya David Shivers also known as DJ has a dual citizenship in the US and Germany. Today he is wearing an outfit from Kenya. It is a tan two-piece outfit with embroidery called a Bo Bo. The pants have a drawstring and the top has buttons and a clip. It is very informal worn at festivals and other social gatherings. The bright color is supposed to move the spirits and make them happy. Betty Akyempemhene - Ghana Betty (twin 1) is from Ghana and attends OSU Newark. She is wearing a formal outfit from Ghana. The formal wear is a two piece with colors of brown and orange. This outfit is for outdoor gatherings, such as for church functions and other African festivals. Amin Jimale -Saudi ArabiaAmin is wearing a white garment called a Thobe. It is a traditional cloth worn by men. He is also wearing a white scarf around his head with white pants and traditional sandals. Slide 62: Idris Hassan -Somali Idris is wearing a traditional Somali cloth that would be wrapped around your waist. It comes in many colors such as red, green, blue, etc. This one is checkered with blue lines, and light blue and brown squares. This also would be worn with a scarf or a hat. Kenneth Madsen – American IndianKenneth is an instructor of Geography at OSU Newark. His attire is a ready-to-wear outfit that was purchased at a men’s clothing store for approximately $40. The outfit features a Nehru collared long shirt with attractive embroidery surrounding the front opening. The accompanying trousers have tapered legs and are elongated to highlight the gathering around the ankle area. Patricia Lazo – IndiaPatricia’s outfit was custom-designed for her by a tailor in New Delhi and features a tunic style blouse which is worn over a pair of pants. The ensemble is accentuated by the matching shawl which is casually draped over the shoulder. The entire outfit was measured and sewn in less than 24 hours and cost less than $20. Slide 63: Kenneth Madsen – American IndianKenneth is wearing a Tohono O’odham (autumn) ribbon shirt. Part of a broader pan-Indian style, this particular shirt was custom designed for him by Lucinda Hughes-Juan, a business instructor and former colleague of Kenneth’s at Tohono O’odham (Autumn) Community College in Sells, Arizona and a regular guest columnist for "Indian Country worn for special public occasions by men whereas. The black and white ribbons represent the printed word of his graduate work. Apart from their incorporation into clothing, ribbons may reflect religious or other symbolism such as completing pilgrimages shared with close friends and family. Saniyah Burke- USSaniyah Burke is 2 years old born in the US. She is wearing a very formal dress that is green with small pink flowers, white tights, and white shoes. She is wearing a white hat with a white purse to accent her wardrobe. Her favorite movies are Madagascar 1 & 2 and she is a big fan of Dora.
