Ways to Reduce Lower Back Pain from A Desk Job

slide 2:

If you work for long hours sitting at your desk in front of a computer then you must be aware of the pain in your lower back. Sitting for prolonged hours in your office can put your back at risk and negatively affect your spine. Sitting in the wrong posture for longer periods puts a large amount of pressure on the back muscles and spinal cord.

slide 3:

Adjust your monitor so it’s at the right height and distance from you. You can also put a stack of books underneath it to increase the height. Your monitor should be an arms length away from your body and needs to be at a resting eye level. If your computer screen is too low then you are going to be spending much of your time in a forward head posture and if it’s off to the side then you are going to be over-utilizing muscles on one side of your body. Your chair should be in along with the proper ergonomics and positioning of the body. If youre too short then use a footrest to make sure that your feet are always flat to maintain good posture. Keep important materials such as telephone or stapler close to the body to prevent excessive stretching. If you can’t get to these particular items easily then stand up to get them.

slide 4:

Make sure your chair has good support for your lower back and has armrests. Keep your wrist in a natural and comfortable position. It should not be flexed down or flexed up. Sit comfortably as close as possible to the desk so your upper arms are parallel to the spine. If your computer keyboard and your elbows are not at a 90-degree angle then you need to adjust the office chair either up or down. Give your legs enough room under your desk where you can bend your knees at 90 degrees and put your feet flat on the floor. Make sure you often get up and take small breaks and walk around to take the stress off those muscles. Make sure your hips are squarely against the back of the chair this will ensure that youre not overarching your lower back.
