Overview of the 1960’s : 

Overview of the 1960’s Average family income in 1960 was only $5, 600. A cheeseburger cost about 20 cents, with fries and extra 10 cents. Candy bars were only 5 cents, and milk was 25 cents a quart. A Volkswagen Beetle cost only $1, 675. Men could buy a suit for $20.

Overview cont. There were no black senators and only four black men in the house of Representatives. Women had little power in 1960. Only 35 percent of women worked in 1960. Women full-length bridal gown cost about $36.50 Between 1946 and 1964 30 million babies were born.

1960 Wilma Rudolf won three gold medals

1960 : 

1960 The first form of civil disobedience was the sit-in. Four African-American college students entered a segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina they were refused service. They sat peacefully at the counter until it closed. The protest made news, sit-ins spread throughout the South.

1961 : 

1961 John F Kennedy moves into the White House. He gives his famous speech-”Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

1961 The Soviets sent the first man into space.

1962 : 

1962 John Glenn became the first man to orbit the earth – 3 times. It was a five hour flight.

1963 : 

1963 Martin Luther King Jr. made the speech, “I have a Dream.”

1963 : 

1963 President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22.

1963 : 

1963 Church bombing in an Alabama church. 4 young black girls were killed.

1964 : 

1964 The Beatles, a British rock and roll band became very popular. They performed concerts that were quickly sold out.

1964 : 

1964 Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize.

1965 : 

1965 Malcolm X was assassinated. The world’s first roofed stadium was built , the Houston Astrodome March to Selma on the Pettus Bridge became known as “bloody Sunday”

1966 : 

1966 Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse and a Pioneer of animated films, died of cancer on December 15, but his legend lives on.

1967 : 

1967 The first heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christian Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa.

Sports The first Super Bowl was played in 1967, with Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs; the Packers won.

1968 : 

1968 Civil Rights Leader Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Two months later, Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s brother was assassinated, too. Both were civil rights leaders. On November 5, 1968, Shirley Chisholm was elected America’s first black woman to Congress.

1969 : 

1969 Nearly half a million people head over to a 600 acre farm in new York for the Woodstock Festival. Many top rock musicians were there. It lasted three days, a weekend of music, love and peace. July 20, 1969, one of the biggest events of history happened. Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

Inventions The computer mouse was developed. The First hand-held calculator was invented in 1967 by Texas Instruments, at a cost of &2, 500 a piece. The first cash dispensing machine(ATM) is installed By First Philadelphia Bank in 1968.
