Needle free parenteral drug delivery: Leveraging active transdermal technologies for pediatric use. Mr. Deshmukh Amol S., Mr. Mahajan V. R. Administration of medications via the parenteral route directly to the systemic circulation is an effective way of overcoming the first pass effect, obtaining quicker onset of action, and achieving higher bioavailability . Active transdermal delivery approaches can be broadly termed as transdermal microporation technologies . This is comprised of the energy-enhanced trans-dermal delivery of medications and the use of microneedles . The former includes the use of energy to pretreat and disrupt the stratum corneum , the primary skin barrier, to transport macro-molecules while the use of microneedles is a mechanical way to permeate the stratum corneum . Microneedles as an innovative alternate to injections relies on an array of small projections, containing the active drug substance over a square centimeter patch that can deliver an accurate dose across the transdermal interface.
