Strategies : 

Strategies Summarizing Inferring Mediating Vocabulary

Summarizing : 

Summarizing Purpose: Sts learn how to synthesize info, and put info in their own words. How do they do it: Sts learn to determine important facts, weed out unimportant details, sequence information, and put into own words. Goals: Be able to use this strategy for the rest of their lives, take content and say what they learned in their own words, sufficient summary, communicating with confidence comes from understanding and rephrasing what you learned.

Summarizing Cont. : 

Summarizing Cont. Extra support: Graphic organizers, modeling, demonstrating, mediating, questions, activating prior knowledge, immediate feedback, modifying work, utilize sentence frames, TPS, scaffolding, using grouping strategies, and other activities.

Inferring : 

Inferring Inferring is: Visualizing and thinking beyond the text; thinking beyond literal interpretation. Purpose: Sts can read beyond the literal text and make applications about what they have read to their own lives, cultures, and the world. How they do it: Observe and analyze text, read beyond the lines, make connection among text, make connection with own belief and culture, make predictions, and provide support.

Inferring cont. : 

Inferring cont. Goals: Understand how to read bwtn the lines, learn the language for inferring, get your self engaged by asking questions and responding and having emotion, be creative and be different (it’s ok), reread when things are not clarified for ones self, and compare and contrast. Extra Support: Model and practice the process, visualizations (write down steps), provide feedback, scaffolding, wordless picture books ( ask W questions), partners, TPS, and small groups.

Mediating Vocabulary : 

Mediating Vocabulary Main focus: Students should make vocabulary connections between primary language and English, learn how to break up words in English and look for patterns, and test predictions made about vocabulary. How do they do it: Make connections, understand origins of words, utilize cognates as much as possible, understand onsets and rimes, and validate the sounds of English language. Goals: Manipulate the language (it’s possible), develop confidence to take risks (secure, safe, and belonging!), learn about context clues (commas, phrases, specific words: is called, which is, for instance), and find cognates (important/importante).

Mediating Vocab cont. : 

Mediating Vocab cont. Extra support: Isolate word and break apart its meaning, graphic organizers, illustrations, word walls with cognates or vocabulary, review and practice, partners, scaffold, venn diagrams, small groups, games; role playing, modeling, and acting out the words.
