Preceded the Early Modern Era. THE DARK AGE(The Early Middle Ages) : THE DARK AGE(The Early Middle Ages) After the Fall of Roman Empire German (Franks) invasion destroyed the Roman Empire. Money no longer used – decline in trade. Most people remained in the village of their birth i.e. - No new city growth - No support for learning - Common language no longer used - Fall of central government The Concept of Government Changed : The Concept of Government Changed Germanic Kingdom Family ties and personal loyalty. Government by unwritten rules and traditions. Chief leads a band of warriors, who have given a pledge of loyalty. Too much emphasis on personal relation/kinship made it impossible to have a proper government for the large territory. Rome Loyal to public government/empire. Written laws. Elected officials rule. Centralized Government. Role of Christianity : Role of Christianity Monasteries Christian religious communities for men. Cut-off from outside world. Spend time praying and copying Roman and Greek books and the Bible. The Catholic Church – the only place where reading/writing and centralized order continued during the Dark Ages. Spread and growth of blind religious faith : Spread and growth of blind religious faith Clovis - German leader (leader of the Franks) became a christian and gave more powers to the Church. Charles Martel after Clovis defeated Muslims and he was crowned by the Pope. This shows influence of the Pope in politics. Frankish King Charlemagne built greatest empire since ancient Rome. Spreads Christianity through conquests. Spread and growth of blind religious faithcontinues……. : Spread and growth of blind religious faithcontinues……. Charlemagne’s government expanded the empire. Helped Christian church spread. Helped Church establish schools and monasteries. Borrowed ideas from old Roman empire. Papal Power Grows : Papal Power Grows After the death of Charlemagne – Church got involved in politics. Pope’s palace became the center of government. Church started raising armies, repairs roads, helps poor and negotiates peace treaties. The idea of a churchly kingdom, ruled by the pope, became a central theme of the Middle Age.
