Fact About the Beery VMIWho it can be preformed by?: The test can be performed by: School Psychologist Occupational therapists L earning disability specialists Specialist teachers Who it can be preformed by?Who is the test for?: It can provide updated norms or standard scores for individuals as young as 2yrs and up 18 It can also provide adult norms from 19 and up As stated earlier, it is for individuals who have significant difficulty with visual-motor integration Who is the test for?Two Versions: Short Format and Full Format Similarities -Both present drawings for respondent to copy -Easy to hard Difference -The Short Format is often used for ages 2-8 and takes about 10 minutes. The Full Format takes about 15 minutes to conduct Two VersionsMaterials Needed: There is not many materials needed: Pencil Test/paper Beery VMI Manual Materials NeededHow it Works: Step By Step: The Administrator ask the Respondent to draw/copy geometric figures onto a form. The administrator explains that the student cannot use an eraser so they should take their time. The respondent copies the drawings while the administrator observes. They go page by page, with each page containing 3 geometric shapes. The drawings go from easiest to hardest and there is 30 geometric figures. Once the student has finished then the administrator can score the test. At times, Visual Perception and Motor coordination subtest are included. How it WorksReading the Results: To score the results, the administrator uses the Beery VMI Manual. Results can be reported as: standard score, percentile, or other equivalents Hand scored Reading the ResultsScoring: Each geometric shape is worth one point. There is a total of 30 points. The manual goes in detail on how to score the results and each shape has a set criteria of what can be counted as a point. For example certain shapes have to have certain angles to be scored. The use of a protractor might be necessary. After the point total has been added and a raw score if given. The manual gives a chart to see where the student places. The raw score can determine if the student performing to their age capability. ScoringExample of a Scoring Criteria: “1. Three overlapping circles showing seven openings. The triangular opening in the center must show.” “2. One circle clearly below the others. (Position can be checked by connecting the mid-points of the circles to form a triangle. The lowest side of the triangle must be 20 degrees or more off the horizontal.” The criteria consist of several pictures that show what can be a score and ones that should not be scored.
