Atlantis is a legendary island? / continent? / archipelago? With many mountains in front of the Pillars of Hercules “ ( Геркулесовы столбы) . Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night".

Plato In 360 B.C. Plato , a Greek philisopher, wrote philosophical dialogues. He lived in Athens ( Афины) in Greece. Plato wrote many dialogues, including Critias ( «Критий») and Timaeus («Тимей») . In his dialogues Plato told about the kingdom Atlantis.

Athens: 

Athens Athens was an ideal city with the perfect society. Plato wrote that Athens had an ideal government ( правительство) , good people, brave soldiers, good economy and naval power ( морская сила) . It was UTOPIA (“ideal world”).

GOD ATLAS: 

GOD ATLAS Poseidon was the king of the sea. He had many children. Atlas was his eldest son and became the king of Atlantis in the Atlantic Ocean.

Atlantis: 

Atlantis Atlantis was in the Atlantic ocean. Atlantis was a very big POWERFUL kingdom which wanted to attack Europe and Asia. IT WAS VERY LARGE!!! Plato wrote that Atlantis had greedy (жадный) and mean (надменный) people, a lot of gold and silver (серебро) , many temples ( храмы) . People were very rich and very proud. Zeus ( Зевс) saw it and wanted to punish the people.

Atlantis made a war and began to conquer Europe and turn people into slaves ( превращать людей в рабов) . People of Athens fought against Atlantis and freed ( освобождали) people.

Truth or a myth? Some people say that Plato made a fairy-tale about Atlantis and there was NO Atlantis at all!!! People say that Plato made up Atlantis to show how gods can punish proud people.

How did he imagine the end?: 

How did he imagine the end? In 373 BC an Greek city Helike on the Peloponnese peninsula was destroyed by an earthquake and a tsunami in one day and one night.
