Sunda Strait, Indonesia 1883, the unsuspecting citizens of this island were having a normal day when an earthquake hit. Then, a huge explosion struck with a blast equal to 200 megatons of TNT, about 13,000 times the yield of the Little Boy bomb which devastated Hiroshima, Japan. The eruption ejected more than 25 cubic kilometers of ash, pumice, rock, and magma. :

Krakatoa spewed out so much debris it reached India! It killed thousands. It’s explosion was so gigantic that historians called it “THE DAY THE WORLD EXPLODED.”

The plate Krakatoa is on is the Eurasian Plate. It’s a strato-volcano and is still active. Krakatoa’s elevation is 813 m.

The blast nearly destroyed the entire island! The island is only there today because the volcano is still active.

By three months the ash had reached New York and London. The ash rose into the sky and causes temperatures to drop in 1883 by 1.5 degrees. They did not return to normal until 1888.
