USAGE : USAGE A collective noun can usually take either a singular or a plural verb. Eg: The team was playing well. The team were playing well. The choice depends on whether we see the group as a whole or as individual people. How do you tell if a collective noun is singular or plural? When the members are acting as individuals, the collective noun is plural and requires plural verbs and pronouns.
