Counseling Degree Online - The Amazing Career Benefits If you have an ear for listening to other people's problems and you enjoy giving people sound advice then getting a counseling degree online is just what you need to enhance your listening as well as communication skills. Through this degree program, you will learn how to become good listeners and better communicators. You can help a lot of patients with their problems and you can even help them seek treatment for certain mental health issues they may be suffering from.

Slide 2:

Once you have completed your counseling degree and passed the certification process, you will find lots of career options. Most graduates of counseling degree programs prefer to specialize in only one area of counseling. There are also those who would choose to work either with children or with corporate employees; and there are those who choose to work in drug treatment facilities.

Slide 3:

A counseling degree online is the best way to transition to becoming a counseling professional. It is a fulfilling and rewarding job because you are able to help people cope with their personal, social, educational and family problems among others. To pursue this career, there are actually educational requirements that would depend on complexities like work environment, licensure requirements, specialty, employer and chosen occupation. It is best to check with your state, local government, volunteer organizations and prospective employers for more information about appropriate counseling degree programs.

Slide 4:

Most employers and states require their counselors to be licensed. To get licensure, most counseling degree online programs require a master's degree program with up to 2,000 hrs. of supervised clinical internship; state administered examinations and a continuing career education. Then again, there are also states that enable you to start a career even with a bachelor's degree for as long as there are approved counseling courses.

Addiction Counselor Program You already know that a drug addiction is not a good thing. Whether it is prescription drugs where the addiction came on accidentally as a result of legally prescribed medications to treat something, or whether it is the illegal street drugs that are purchased on back alleys or dark basements, drug addiction is something that needs to be addressed.

Slide 6:

The hardest thing about the whole process is to get the addict to realize, understand, and accept the fact that they are an addict. The vast majority of addicts do not realize this, and until they realize it, you are going to be pushing and pulling them into rehab, instead of them going willingly. There are alcohol and drug counselors who can help you with this task by talking with that person, and these services are often city, state, or county sponsored and are therefore at minimal or no cost.

Slide 7:

There are multiple levels to a drug rehab program or an alcohol rehab program. Some programs merely scrape the surface and focus on detox , where they work to get the chemicals out of the body of the addict. While this is certainly a step in the right direction, it is often not the whole story. Other programs take the next step, which includes detox but also includes getting to the underlying reason why the addict feels that the alcohol or drugs are necessary. It might be due to the collapse of a marriage, loss of a job, a dire financial situation, or a host of other reasons, but the trained professional will work with that person to help them understand that the alcohol or drugs are not a solution to the problem, and in fact make the problem even worse.

Slide 8:

Is Counseling and Psychotherapy a right career for you? In the last number of years there has been increasing recognition of the important role Counseling and Psychotherapy plays in the mental health arena. This has resulted in an increasing demand for well trained professionals. Standardised regulation for Counselling and Psychotherapy is now coming on stream and thankfully this profession will be well regulated going into the future. This will mean that the academic requirements to become a Counsellor or Psychotherapist will be set at a minimum degree level.

Slide 9:

This presents a challenge for the Course Designers and Accrediting Bodies as they are asked to find a fit between the academic components of theory and practice with the personal developments needs of the student.  Personal development is difficult to evaluate and set time limits on, however it does need to be assessed and this is usually done on the course by the experiential group work facilitator and also in clinical supervision.

Slide 10:

It is important to note that the training can be stressful as past or present issues will be thrown up and it can be daunting to have to deal with these while also dealing with the normal stresses of everyday life. This is where the support of the trainees personal therapist is important as he/she will provide a safe space to step back and look at these issues objectively. This relationship also gives the trainee an understanding of what it is like to be in the clients chair and to experience the vulnerability that the client feels. Sitting face to face with someone who is going through a life crisis is a huge challenge and responsibility. An experienced supervisor is a key asset for the trainee and should be visited for at least one session for every 5 client hours.
