GENDER DIFFERENCE Society’s Opinion:

GENDER DIFFERENCE Society’s Opinion

1 Girl 1 Ocean 1 Dream :

1 Girl 1 Ocean 1 Dream

THE STORY OF A YOUNG WOMAN:

THE STORY OF A YOUNG WOMAN Who had the courage and determination to prove young GIRLS can do almost anything...

Slide 5:

On the 18th October 2009 16 year old Jessica Watson set sail to become the youngest female to circumnavigate the world solo.

Slide 6:

Why did she do it? “I’d like to think that by sailing solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world I've proved that anything really can be achieved if you set your mind to it. Anything really is possible." Watson, 2010

Negative Opinions of Society:

Negative Opinions of Society Too Young Girls should be at school at 16 Too Dangerous Her parents should not allow this Not strong enough mentally and physically for the journey Left: Image sourced from: http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/news7940.htmlon 10/01/2011

During the journey…:

During the journey… Jessica Watson Endured Rough seas Storms Sickness Loneliness Anxiety Hunger Exhaustion

The Outcome:

The Outcome After nearly 7 months at sea.... On the 15th May 2010.... This courageous young woman arrived home. She proved to many that anything is possible. Right: Image sourced from http://www.fiveaa.com.au/PhotoSimple_127078 on 10/01/2011

How does this relate to difference?:

How does this relate to difference? Difference: What we would normally not expect Austin 2010

Slide 11:

Why would a 16 year old girl undertake a journey like this? We wouldn't expect a girl to do this. We would expect a girl to be at school, hanging with friends and spending times at shopping malls

THE DEBATE:

THE DEBATE Gender played a big role in this argument, but so did age. Many argued that she was too young. 16 vs 30-50? Do children have the strength to sail a yacht solo? Do they have the mental ability to survive?

Final Thought…:

Final Thought… I believe that Jessica Watson as a young female will inspire young females and males that you cannot let stereotypes and negative opinions stand in your way of your dreams

PART TWO :

PART TWO Question? How can we teach Gender/Age Differences in the classroom?

Learning Experiences:

Learning Experiences Task: As a class, brainstorm various activities in which stereotypically Boys participate in and Girls participate in. The students may choose to participate as an individual or as a small group- depending of what type of activity they choose. Examples: Football Cricket Sailing Martial arts Building Hobbies like planes, machines Watch a boy’s movie Watch a girly movie about princesses or love stories Netball Soccer Ballet Dancing Play dress ups with your sister or girls Cooking with mum Clean the house for a week 2. Choose an activity, to participate in for an afternoon (if a sport play a few games)

Reflections:

Reflections 3. After the students have participated or researched their chosen activity, have each individual student reflect on their journey with a journal entry. 4. Possible questions to ask yourself: How do I feel about taking on this new activity? Should It be stereotyped? Should Girls/Boys be about to play this sport together? If not why? Did I enjoy my experience? Would I play/participate in this again? If not why? Why do I think that this is aimed at boys/girls?

Share the Experience:

Share the Experience 5. Have the students share some of the experiences with the class. If they have learned something new, teach some of their peers.

Final Thought…:

Final Thought… Teaching gender equality and difference in classrooms is important to develop students self confidence Helps to understand the opposite sex Strays away from social stereotypes Prepares for the social world, open to experiences
