Difference: What we would normally not expect Austin 2010Slide 11: Why would a 16 year old girl undertake a journey like this? We wouldn't expect a girl to do this. We would expect a girl to be at school, hanging with friends and spending times at shopping mallsTHE DEBATE: THE DEBATE Gender played a big role in this argument, but so did age. Many argued that she was too young. 16 vs 30-50? Do children have the strength to sail a yacht solo? Do they have the mental ability to survive?Final Thought…: Final Thought… I believe that Jessica Watson as a young female will inspire young females and males that you cannot let stereotypes and negative opinions stand in your way of your dreamsPART TWO : PART TWO Question? How can we teach Gender/Age Differences in the classroom?Learning Experiences: Learning Experiences Task: As a class, brainstorm various activities in which stereotypically Boys participate in and Girls participate in. The students may choose to participate as an individual or as a small group- depending of what type of activity they choose. Examples: Football Cricket Sailing Martial arts Building Hobbies like planes, machines Watch a boy’s movie Watch a girly movie about princesses or love stories Netball Soccer Ballet Dancing Play dress ups with your sister or girls Cooking with mum Clean the house for a week 2. Choose an activity, to participate in for an afternoon (if a sport play a few games)Reflections: Reflections 3. After the students have participated or researched their chosen activity, have each individual student reflect on their journey with a journal entry. 4. Possible questions to ask yourself: How do I feel about taking on this new activity? Should It be stereotyped? Should Girls/Boys be about to play this sport together? If not why? Did I enjoy my experience? Would I play/participate in this again? If not why? Why do I think that this is aimed at boys/girls?Share the Experience: Share the Experience 5. Have the students share some of the experiences with the class.
