A Nation of Immigrants Why come to America? to gain freedom they did not have in their home of origin to escape unfair treatment to escape wars and shortages of food to seek job opportunities to seek shelter and opportunities

When Did Most Immigrants Come?:

When Did Most Immigrants Come? Four major waves of immigration First Second Since the 1600s the first wave began with the colonists who came from Europe between 1600 and the beginning of the Revolutionary War in 1775. The second wave of immigrants came between 1820 and the 1870s. During that time, many people came from Europe to escape famine , or lack of food, and hard economic times. Third Third wave of immigration came between 1880 and 1920. Many of these people came from Europe and entered the United States at Ellis Island in New York. Fourth Fourth wave began in 1965 when U.S. immigration laws were changed. The change made it possible for more people to immigrate to the United States.

The laws were designed to block illegal immigrants from entering the United States. Some provided help for illegal immigrant who had been in U.S. for years.

What is Political Asylum?:

Political asylum A place where a person is safe from being harmed by his or her own country or government, Political asylum may be given to visitors, athletes, artists, sailors, or workers from another government. It is given to these people because they feel mistreated by their own countries. The United States offers them protection until it is clear why they wish to leave their native lands. If their reasons are strong enough, the aliens are allowed to stay. They may then apply for United States citizenship.

What is the Civil Rights Act?:

What is the Civil Rights Act? Civil Rights Act of 1964 Ended discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in all public places, employment, and voter registration. States had passed laws that were intended to segregate, or separate, African Americans. These laws were challenged many times beginning in 1892, especially in education. Often the Supreme Court ruled the law was constitutional if the facility was “ separate but equal .” But in 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that in public education “separate but equal” had no place. The Supreme Court said having separate schools for African Americans were not equal under the Constitution.
