Film Opening Titles – The Odd Life of Timothy Green:

Film Opening Titles – The Odd Life of Timothy Green Annabel Street

PowerPoint Presentation:

The first thing we see in the opening titles of ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’ is the Disney titles. This is a very famous production company which engages the audience as they will assume the film will be as good as other films Disney has produced. Because D isney is such a big production company, we can tell that the budget for the film would be quite high. ‘Disney presents’ is then the first name to appear in the credits because it is so important. Disney usually makes children's films so the audience will assume that the film would be suitable and enjoyable for children.

The next names to appear are the main actors in the film. These are shown at the start of the opening titles because the audience are interested in them and if the audience already know who they are then they are more likely to watch the film. This is because they want to see what their character in this film is like and compare it to the other films they have appeared. The image behind the text is of trees with orange leaves, suggesting the season the film is set – autumn. The use of trees also has connotations of nature which implies the main theme of the film. The slow camera movements suggest the movie could be quite sad and not a fast paced genre e.g. action adventure.

PowerPoint Presentation:

As the camera pans round we see a man and a woman sitting at a window which suggests, as they are the first people we see, they are the main characters. The name of the film then slowly fades on to the screen which sets the fairly slow tone of the film.

Another, less well-known production company is then listed. It is placed after the other two, more famous production companies, because people are not as interested as they would be towards a more famous brand. The director’s name is shown next. It is unusual to place the director’s name near the start of the opening titles, however, in this film it’s shown near the start and at the end because it’s one of the most important names in the sequence.

PowerPoint Presentation:

There is a short opening clip in the middle of the titles which establishes the story. The first shot is of some sheets of paper which suggests the characters are in a formal place. Then we see a close up shot of the main characters and we can see that their facial expressions are very serious which leaves the audience wondering what they are doing. We then see a plaque on the wall saying ‘U.S. Adoption services’ which tells the audience that the film is probably set in America and the characters are probably trying to adopt a child.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The titles then carry on with some of the other main actors names. The shots are following the characters in their car. We get to see the surrounding area of where they live and work. It looks very typical American which suggests the style of the film.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The less famous actors and then listed but in groups which is conventional.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Less important roles that the audience are less interested in are then shown in the titles such as music supervisor and costume designer as people are not interested in.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The next names to appear are the producers. These are placed towards the end so they stay in the audience’s mind as they watch the film. The second to last names are the writers. Conventionally the director’s name is last as he has the most important role in the making of the film.
