Energy enters the ecosystem in the form of heat.:

Energy enters the ecosystem in the form of heat. Energy and inorganic nutrients flow trough the ecosystem.

. Energy flows in a simple food chain. At each level of the food chain, about 90% of the energy is lost in the Form of heat. Therefore, as you move up the food chain, there is less energy available. NOTE!! Each organism in the food chain is only transferring one-tenth of its energy to the next organism.

To summarize energy flow and inorganic nutrients:

To summarize energy flow and inorganic nutrients Ultimate source of energy is the sun . Ultimate fate of energy is to lost as heat . Decomposers remove the last energy from the remains of organisms. Inorganic nutrients are recycled , energy is not .

FOOD CHAIN CONSISTS OF Primary producers Herbivores- also called as primary consumer. Carnivores/secondary consumers. Decomposers.

. Number of steps in food chain is limited 4-5 . Shorter the food chain the greater will be the biomass. Thus fewer number of links will prove to be more efficient .

Characteristics of food chain Food chain is always straight and proceeds in a progressive straight line. Unidirectional flow of energy. Usually occur 4 or 5 trophic levels

Types of food chain Parasitic food chain/auxiliary food chain Detritus food chain Grazing food chain/predator food chain Parasitic food chain begins with host and ends in parasite.

Humans vs. Natural Food Chain :

Humans vs. Natural Food Chain Its mainly depends on agriculture At most it has a 3 levels 1.Producers(crops) 2.Primary consumers ( livestock, humans) 3.Secondary consumers (humans) This means that little energy is lost between tropic levels.

Problems in agriculture ecosystem:

Problems in agriculture ecosystem Monoculture Small area Use of chemicals Few plants for food Inorganic nutrient recycling problem ( BIOLOGYCAL MAGNIFICATION )

Solutions for above problems:

Solutions for above problems No-till farming Sewage sludge But sewage sludge may lead to biological magnification.

Conclusion From these concepts we are trying to know how energy moves through an ecosystem. Then the idea about how ecosystem are balanced, how they may be affected by human activities. Also we can think about the agriculture ecosystem and its maintenance.
