Sustainable development is defined as a pattern of social and structured economic transformations (i.e. development) which optimizes the economic and societal benefits available in the present, without jeopardizing the likely potential for similar benefits in the future. A primary goal of sustainable development is to achieve a reasonable and equitably distributed level of economic well-being that can be perpetuated continually for many human generations. Slide 3: "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". --The World Commission on Environment and Development, Brundtland Commission 1987 DEFINITION Slide 4: An "unsustainable situation" occurs when natural capital (the sum total of nature's resources) is used up faster than it can be replenished. Sustainability requires that human activity only uses nature's resources at a rate at which they can be replenished naturally. Inherently the concept of sustainable development is intertwined with the concept of carrying capacity. Slide 5: Why Sustainability Now? We are the first generation capable of determining the habitability of the planet for humans and other species. Slide 6: Why Sustainability? Human presence on a global scale All living systems in long term decline at unprecedented and accelerating rate Unprecedented growth in population and consumption Gap between rich and poor accelerating Political instability and war Protracted energy challenge/crisis Global Warming Slide 8: August 1941 August 2004 Slide 10: KEY ASPECTS FOR ‘SD’ 1.Inter-generational equity: emphasis us to minimize the adverse impact on resources and environment and suggest us to handover a safe ,healthy and resourceful environment to our future generations. 2.Intra-generational equity: emphasis us to minimize the wealth gap within and between the nations during the development process Slide 11: SUSTAINABILE DEVELOPMENT FOR IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE…….. Our need and requirements will reflect the manner of development that occurs in our society. If we gear our needs and requirements towards sustainability, then only can sustainable development be possible. Our today's consumption pattern will inevitably have its implications tomorrow. As a consumer, one should be conscious of products which are eco-friendly and resource conservation oriented. While assessing eco-friendly products, one should take care of the following. Is the product recyclable How much pollution would the product cause during its production, consumption and disposal What impacts the products have on your health? Is the product resources conservation oriented? Slide 13: PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Respect and care for community of life Improve the quality of human life Conserve the earth’s viability and diversity Minimize the depletion of non-renewable resources Keep with earth’s carrying capacity Change the personal attitude and practices Enable the community to care for their own environment Provide a national framework for integrating development and conservation Care a global alliance Slide 14: The Development plans have to ensure: Sustainable and equitable use of resources for meeting the needs of the present and future generations without causing damage to environment. To prevent further damage to our life-support systems; To conserve and nurture the biological diversity, gene pool and other resources for long term food security". Slide 15: GUIDELINES TO CAMPAIGN FOR SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY Involve every one and encourage them. Use all available media. Relate national and global issues to local situations. Get people to interact and discuss their vision for their area. Give people summaries and synthesis of the facts. Make sure that people have access to clear and comprehensible information. Involve volunteers, especially children in projects in their area. Slide 16: Sustainable agriculture is the practice of farming using principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. It has been defined as "an integrated system of plant and animal production practices having a site-specific application that will, over the long term: Satisfy human food and fiber needs Make the most efficient use of non-renewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls Sustain the economic viability of farm operations Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole.” Sustainable agriculture Slide 17: sustainable forestry Sustainable forest management (SFM) is the management of forests according to the principles of sustainable development. Sustainable forest management uses very broad social, economic and environmental goals. A range of forestry institutions now practice various forms of sustainable forest management and a broad range of methods and tools are available that have been tested over time.
