GREEN COMPUTING By X.Anexshe Revedha S.Hamini Preetha KLN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING The Environmental Impact of Desktop Computing

What is Green Computing? :

What is Green Computing ? The positive (or least negative) relationship between the physical computer and its impact to the environments in which it moves through from cradle to grave.

Green Computing Why ? :

Green Computing Why ? Growing public environmental awareness Increasing impacts on environmental and human health Corporate social responsibility Reduces lot of energy Reduce pollution. Reduce toxicity. Printing often uncessary.

Pathways of Green computing. :

Pathways of Green computing. Green use Green disposal Green design Green manufacturing

Cradle to Grave Approach :

Cradle to Grave Approach Full life-cycle analysis, not just the product on our desks Looks at: Manufacturing Use during lifetime Disposal and reallocation

Manufacturing – Monitors:

Manufacturing – Monitors CRT – lead and zinc leachate mean monitors are hazardous waste (Lee et al ., 2004) Lead: bioavailable in soil - can attack proteins and DNA, as well as interfere with nervous system function (Bechara, 2004; Needleman, 2004) LCD – 4-12 mg mercury /unit (Williams, 2003) Liquid crystals – polycyclic or halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, 588 different compounds 4% have potential for acute toxicity, but show no mutagenic effects in bacteria tests (Williams, 2003)

E-waste Impacts in China:

Manufacturing – Good News:

Manufacturing – Good News Greener technology PBDE-free plastic lead-free soldering fewer toxic solvents Plastics labelled with recycling codes Less material used Independent certification bodies e.g. TCO, Nordic Swan, EU Eco-label

INNOVATIVE FEATURES Energy saving Reduction of waste. Eco friendly approach. Virtualisation . Terminal Server. Power Management. Data centre power. Power supply. Storage. Material recycling. Tele computing.

Slide 13:

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GREEN COMPUTING Turn off your Computer at night so it runs only 8 hours a day , you will reduce your energy use by 810 Kilowatts per year and net a 67% annual savings. Purchase flat screen monitors-they use significantly less energy and are not as hard on your eyes as CRTs. Plan your computer related activities so you can do them all at once, keeping computer off at other time. Consider as small monitor – a 14” display uses 40% less energy than 17” one. Enable the standby / sleeping mode and power management settings.

Slide 14:

Keep your pc for atleast 5 years, this reduces energy consumption by 40%. Use of toxic materials like lead can be replaced by silver and copper. By and use low power desktop or laptop computers ( 40 to 90 watts ) Choose dark colors for background for your screen display bright colours display consumes more power. Forgo the screen saver. Review document drafts and e-mails on screen instead of printing. No screen savers. Consider and inkjet printer – although a bit slower than laser printers, inkjet use 80 to 90% less energy.

Slide 15:

ADVANTAGES OF GREEN COMPUTING Saving energy and resources can actually save people money in long run. Minimize the use of paper and properly recycle waste paper. Reduce low carbondioxide emission, which comes from the reduction in amount of fossilfuels. Reduces lot of energy. Environmental friendly. Use energy efficiently. Use resource efficiently. Save the human from the path of disaster. Reduce toxicity. Corporate social responsibility. “ GO GREEN AND SAVE LIFE SPAN ”
