Ontario's GeologyApplication to Land-use Planning :

Ontario's GeologyApplication to Land-use Planning June 18, 2010, Thunder Bay By Andy Fyon, Director, Ontario Geological Survey, Ontario Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry

Estimating Earth Resource Potential Questions :

Estimating Earth Resource Potential Questions How is the possible to estimate if an Earth Resource occurs? What data / knowledge are needed? Where do we get the data and knowledge?

Earth Resources :

Earth Resources Sand, gravel, aggregate / Construction materials Groundwater Energy (natural gas) Diamonds / gem stones Metals Oxides (Iron or Chromite)

Slide 4:

Earth Resource Potential - Geology At and Below Your Feet Groundwater Landform, Habitat, Aggregate Mineral Resources Energy (oil, gas, geothermal) Geo-hazards, health Geology – surface and below surface. Below the surface. Geology changes – Earth Resource potential changes.

To estimate if an Earth Resource occurs, ask how does the mineral form today- the Model - :

To estimate if an Earth Resource occurs, ask how does the mineral form today- the Model - Copper forms today (black smoker) in volcanic rocks, on the bottom of the ocean Copper

Earth Resource + Geology: Copper :

Earth Resource + Geology: Copper Ocean volcanic rocks = green map rocks = places where copper MAY occur. Copper

Earth Resource + Geology: Aggregate - Dolomite :

Earth Resource + Geology: Aggregate - Dolomite Dolomite aggregate Dolomite source Dolomite may occur.

Earth Resource + Geology: Diamonds + Kimberlite :

Earth Resource + Geology: Diamonds + Kimberlite Diamonds Some kimberlites
