Slide 1:

Geoscience Careers with the Ontario Geological Survey Summer Employment Opportunities

Slide 2:

What We Do… Our geoscientists provide information about the geology of Ontario by describing: - the rocks, sand and gravel deposits left behind by glaciers - the minerals, groundwater and non-renewable energy sources that are in the rocks

Slide 3:

Ontario Geological Survey Mapping Function Precambrian Geoscience Section Old (Archean) shield rock Mineral deposits Geophysics Sedimentary Geoscience Section Mapping & geochemical study of young rock & glacial deposits, groundwater, aggregate, non-renewable energy

Bedrock Mapping :

Bedrock Mapping 5-PERSON CREWS 1 Professional Geoscientist 4 Student Assistants Field work from June to August map an area of 100 to 200 square km about 1 year to makea map

Attributes We’re Looking For… :

Attributes We’re Looking For… Team player – you work well with people, you share information Enthusiastic to learn Good communicator Responsible Professional PH

Role of a Provincial Geologist :

Role of a Provincial Geologist Do geology, collect geoscience data Think geology, interpret the data Plan projects, select & lead field crews Train, coach & mentor students Responsible under the OHSA for the Health & Safety of the field crew Responsible for equipment Identify high mineral potential areas and recommend them Communicate results Contribute to understanding of Ontario geology Working for the public good as a professional geoscientist

Role of A Junior Assistant :

Role of A Junior Assistant Collect geoscience data, data entry Rock sampling, cutting Navigation Camp Maintenance Health and Safety Drive boats, ATVs etc. Ask LOTS of questions

Role of A Senior Assistant :

Role of A Senior Assistant Geologic mapping, data entry Team leadership, camp management Planning traverses Work closely with project geologist Health and Safety

Planning and Training :

Planning and Training Planning: Field gear, compiling maps, learning ArcPad and ArcMap Extensive training prior to going into the field: Bear Avoidance, Wilderness First Aid, Pleasure Craft Operator, Bush Road Driver’s Training, ATV training, WHMIS, propane safety, OGS H&S Manual

Lithology and Textures

Structural Geology :

Structural Geology Measure foliation, bedding, lineation, axial planes, faulting Recognize top directions, shear sense indicators, types of folding

Slide 16:

Opportunity to learn software in a relevant setting that you will use extensively in your career ArcPad and ArcMap

Interpreting Data :

Interpreting Data Each night data is downloaded and discussed Maps are drawn Determine regional and local relationships/patterns

Benefits :

Benefits Extensive training Learn mapping skills Exposure to diverse geology Provides practical side to theory Increased observational skills Work closely with a geologist Unique work areas Fun and long-lasting friendships
