About the Author Lindy has taught ESL and EFL in Italy, Greece, Sweden, U.K., China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. She teaches on the MEd TESOL in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney where she specializes in English for academic purposes. She also provides academic support to students in the Faculty. Lindy Woodrow

The Context : 

The Context Location: University of Sydney Major: Med TESOL Target level: Postgraduate students from non-English-speaking countries Population: 200 / 250 (80%) Focus: English for academic purpose(EAP)

The Situation : 

The Situation Biggest problem: Writing ( grammar and punctuation, structure of writing, plagiarism) “ Plagiarism could be viewed as evidence of successful learning. ” Poor English ability: (IELTS, TOEFL, local certificate exam) Students lacked experience in choosing and finding academic resources

The process of Designing the course : 

The process of Designing the course Identifying the needs and expectations of graduate students An orientation session was organized in 1st week Four immediate solution: one-to-one consultations, short-term course, electronic resources, and skills workshops The process was completed in September 2003 and worked in 2004 : semester one, two, and summer school.

Conclusion English in Academic Setting (EAS) is now an established part of curriculum at the University of Sydney EAS is different than traditional language only or skilled-base course EAS really help students to unpack the sets of discourses, identities, values, and requirements they need to achieve their goals.

Think about it… Except the four immediate solutions and credit-bearing course from the long-term solution, what else can the faculty of Education and Social Work do to fill the gap in the learning experiences of students from non-English-speaking backgrounds?
