Reliable.” Technology Presentation by Amy Jensen EDCO 549 Fall II What is “IClicker” : What is “IClicker” An audience response system allows students to instantly provide feedback and answer questions posed by their instructors…or for our case Counselors Each student uses a "clicker," a portable, handheld device that allows students to vote by "clicking" on the appropriate button for his/her choice. Each instructor uses a receiver that collects votes sent by students’ clickers. Light and portable, the receiver is powered through any computer’s USB port. Instructors present a question and enable polling. Each student responds by “clicking” the appropriate button for his or her choice. A wireless signal is sent immediately from each responding clicker to the receiver. The receiver, through i>clicker’s easy-to-use software, logs and stores the data of each individual student. The instructor can then display voting results in a graph, to the audience. The results are also available for later analysis, grading, and exporting to any gradebook software or course management system. What does IClicker mean to Counselors? : What does IClicker mean to Counselors? IClicker can be used in our field to administer needs aseessments, polls or surveys on student services, graph and display results of standardized tests by grade, class, or groups of individuals, or any other reason to mass assess students and disaggregate the collected data Technologies like Iclicker take out the time and human error of reporting, and reach many more people at one setting Iclicker was initially used in large college campuses, but are being more frequently used in high schools Case Study of IClicker Use : Case Study of IClicker Use Professor Carry Schawel at Oakton Community College taught Psychology courses and was hesitant in using such technology directly in her classses, she started by using an “iclicker” technology in going class to class to survey students on safe sex practices The results found by mass sampling student data led her to results that showed many students needed a human sexuality class. Without this tool she never would have known that. She then began to incorporate it into daily class participation points and found students more motivated and excited to learn Convenience of Iclicker : Convenience of Iclicker From her experience, the professor determined that her instruction was better with the use of clicker technology and it had many positive effects on her students. Her reasons for using the technology were: No software installation Ease of Use No online registration Gain real-time input Get a truer assessment of beliefs and behaviors through anonymity Assess myths Measure participation Increase participation Identify discrepancies between knowledge and behavior Only negative input was that some students reported submitting a response and it was not reported. This was rare in her findings Examples of Data Collection : Examples of Data Collection Explanation of Data : Explanation of Data Mr. Strand, an elemetary school counselor for Fall Creek School District used Iclicker to student response system to assess the effectiveness of the school counseling curriculum he taught for grades 2-5 He did a pre-test by using Iclicker and determined the following results: 76.6 percent of surveyed students in pre-test data said as per an Iclicker assessment that they knew “anyone” had access Mr. Strand, the counselor 21.7 percent knew “how to” access Mr. Strand With this Iclicker information, Mr. Strand wanted to increase student knowledge about accessing him. Therefore he took the data and devised his plan Post-test data from Iclicker revealed that after his intervention, that 92% percent of students knew that anyone could access him and that 88% of students surveyed knew how to access him. The technology allowed him to develop questions that were specific to the data he needed, including opinions and feelings. Until technologies like Iclicker developing assessment tools were labor intensiveness, time consuming, and often times did not get enough responses for the data to be valid Future Implications : Future Implications Iclicker can be utilized not only in college and high school classrooms, but in counseling aspects like Mr. Strands to obtain quick feedback on programs and services school wide, including elementary. Imagine if a student were assigned an Iclicker in elementary and completed personal questionnaires, as well as academic assessments throughout their high school career. With technology development over the upcoming years, it may be able to take that information and be used to determine patterns of likes and interests, strengths and weaknesses to create a profile of possible career interests! Iclicker’s future has many possibilities for student and counselors. References : References What is a clicker?. (2011).
