(2007) described a case of a 47-year-old woman developed therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia after radioiodine treatment for thyroid carcinoma. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and achieved complete response lasting for 3(+) years. Case report Grudeva-Popova J, Yaneva M, Zisov K, Ananoshtev N. Therapy-related acute promyelocytic leukemia after treatment with radioiodine for thyroid cancer: case report. J BUON. 2007 Jan-Mar;12(1):129-32. Slide 3: Magdy Ibrahim In November 2005 Tan et al., described five cases of bacteremia with Arcanobacterium hemolyticum in association with soft-tissue infections from immuno-competent patients. They also reviewed the literature about such a rare condition in humans specially in diabetics. Case report Tan TY, Ng SY, Thomas H, Chan BK. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum bacteraemia and soft-tissue infections: case report . J Infect. 2006 Aug;53(2):e69-74. Epub 2005 Nov 28 Slide 4: Magdy Ibrahim Oliver at al. (2007), reviewed all cases presenting with extra-tubal pregnancy in their institute, including seven interstitial, two cervical, three ovarian and two abdominal pregnancies. They found that both clinical findings and imaging modalities are essential to make an accurate diagnosis. Treatment with minimal access techniques, non-invasive radiological procedures or medical treatment should be encouraged. Case series Oliver R, Malik M, Coker A, Morris J. Management of extra-tubal and rare ectopic pregnancies: case series. Arch Gynecol Obstet. 2007 Mar 13; [Epub ahead of print] Slide 5: Magdy Ibrahim In a study done by Salman et al. (2007), records of eight eyes with traumatic lens abscess were reviewed. All patients underwent cataract extraction with or without vitrectomy. Cataract extraction resulted in control of the infection in all eyes and seven eyes (87.5%) had a favourable visual outcome. Thus, early lens extraction with intracameral antibiotics in eyes with traumatic lens abscess allows control of infection with good visual outcome. Case series Salman A, Parmar P, Philip VR, Thomas PA, Jesudasan CA. Traumatic intralenticular abscess: a case series. Clin Experiment Ophthalmol. 2007 Apr;35(3):252-5. Cases series and reports : Cases series and reports Magdy Ibrahim Done on one single group of individuals (down to 1). Arouse the attention to new, rare or unexpected phenomena or events. Forms a base to build more complex research to answer research questions or to test hypotheses. Evidence can’t be taken from these designs because: No control group. Small sample size. Cases series and reports : Cases series and reports Magdy Ibrahim Advantages: Arouse attention to new issues in Medicine Useful in forming hypotheses, planning natural history studies, and describing clinical experience Easy and inexpensive to do in hospital settings Disadvantages: Very selective patients. No generalization Only most typical (or most atypical) cases are included Difficult to know whether findings are true or by chance Surveys & pilot studies : Surveys & pilot studies Magdy Ibrahim Survey: a method of data collection from target population samples to establish factors causing or contributing to a disease and to develop potential methods for prevention. Pilot study: A small scale preliminary study conducted before the main research, in order to check the feasibility or to improve the design of the research.
