A Document on Discrimination :

A Document on Discrimination A small clip observing the graffiti around the area of Alberni District Secondary School.

Slide 2:

The graffiti in this video does not portray the views of the maker, the school, teachers, or district. The intention is not to offend anybody, but raise awareness that this problem is happening and needs to be paid attention to, and stopped.Racism, sexism, and homophobia is a serious problem, as well as discrimination in general.Together we can get rid of this problem completely, and the first step is to recognize what it is, and that it exists.

Definitions :

Definitions Discrimination: treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favour of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Racism: hatred or intolerance of another race or other races... usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Homophobia: unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality. Sexism: attitudes or behaviour based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles.... discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex, as in restricted job opportunities. Xenophobia: an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

Slide 4:

Sometimes graffiti can display a positive message, such as the picture below of a ‘stop racism’ sign.

Slide 6:

Some images are blurry due to low lighting conditions, such as in the boy’s bathroom.

Slide 9:

Some graffiti was hardly noticeable, while others were clearly displayed. Most people don’t realize that there is racist and homophobic graffiti, unless they are looking for it.

Slide 12:

Scribbled in large letters across a row of lockers.

Slide 14:

Over a 30 minute time period, 38 visible signs of discriminatory vandalism could be found within the cafeteria building, and tech building. This can be stopped. Stand up against discrimination by having a voice. Remember that silence will not be heard, and violence will not be appreciated, but if you stand up with a strong reason, and level head, your voice will be noticed.
