Legend :Legend During the time in the 1600’s when the Spanish colonial ruled, on the island of Guam, there had lived two newlyweds in the quiet hillside village of Mania. The couple were a Spanish officer, and his Chamorro bride. Before, they married, the brides husband was polite, dashing, and romantic, but after their honeymoon he became abusive and cruel. Then every night the husband would demand fresh mountain stream water with his food, and would send the wife to the small creek in the valley below, just to fetch water. After, she’d be done, she would walk and enjoy it buy her self in her lonely walks and become ritual. Her most favorite time was during the full moon, when the glare of the water would shimmer. Then the husband would soon to notice that the wife wasn’t at their house yet, which took longer, and longer. COUNTINOUS ON PAGE 3 …… Page 2


Slide 3:One stormy and rainy night on their wedding anniversary, the husband sent her to the cold and wet blackest of nights. Then as she walked there was no full moon to glare to guide her, she didn’t see that there was a small and trickling stream that turned into a flood. Just then she slipped, and her screaming didn’t help, she scrambled into the rivers depths. Today it is told that if you were to drive over the Maina bridge during a new moon and look into the blackness of night, you may see a ghostly sentinel standing at the river's edge wearing a long and white flowing dress dimilar to a bridal gown, silver hair like the moon and sad red eyes. This is especially true when a dangerous storm is fast approaching on the horizon. Today's local Chamorros refer to her as the "White Lady" who warns of impending danger. (GLOSSARY ON PAGE 8 !) Conflicts & Compromise :Conflicts & Compromise During the legend, the husband took advantage of her. He’d make her wife walk in the stormy, rainy nights of Maina and wouldn’t care. The wife really just went with the flow, and didn’t bother just to get wet. The husband was really mean, and abusive to the wife. Page 4

Glossary :Glossary Mania – A place in Guam Newlyweds – A person recently married Dangerous - full of danger or risk; causing danger; perilous; risky; hazardous; unsafe. Sentinel - a person or thing that watches or stands as if watching. Legend – a no historical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted ashistorical. Advantage - any state, circumstance, opportunity, or means specially favorable to success, interest, or any desired end: the advantage of a good education. Page 8
