ABSTRACT :

ABSTRACT Today the major challenges before construction world is to provide a structure which is far superior to existing conventional structure in every aspect like light in weight, high strength, high life period, highly economical, aesthetic in look, time saving, workable and low maintenance, cold ressistance, improvement in crack, impact and fatigue resistant The basic aim of this presentation is to facilitate construction of a building which is light in weight and economical as compare to the building constructed using ordinary steel.

Slide 4:

INTRODUCTION Structure should be designed to carry combination of loads which it will be subjected during its service period. In design of structures the size of various elements like slab, beam, column, footing etc. significantly depends upon assessment of loads. Nanostructural steel prevents structure to become Bulky and heavy too. The size beams and columns will be reduced by using Nanostructural steel as compared to other steel. Recently, a new type of high-corrosion resistant steel, commercially known as MMFX (Micro-composite Multi-structural Formable Steel), has been developed by MMFX Technologies Professor Gareth Thomas). Corporation, USA. MMFX steel proves to have high-energy absorption (toughness). This property is desirable and allows structure with MMFX reinforcement to dissipate energy during high impact loading conditions, such as punctures, penetrations, earthquakes, etc.

Slide 5:

PROPERTIES OF NANOSTEEL (MMFX) Strain-stress relationship same as HYSD. Average tensile strength 1236 N/mm2. Minimum tensile strain at failure is 12%. Modulus of elasticity = 2.026  105 N/mm2. Poison ratio = 0.26. Shear strength = 768.328 N/mm2.

Slide 6:

COMPARISON BETWEEN NANOSTEEL AND CONVENTIONAL STEEL MMFX steels are extremely high-strength and at the same time maintain high levels of ductility, allowing these steels to be integrated into applications demanding these combined properties. COLD RESISTANCE : Standard steels becomes brittle around 0°F to -20°F. MMFX steels maintain excellent mechanical behavior at temperatures below -200°F. OTHER MATERIAL PROPERTIES : Due to MMFX proprietary microstructure, these steels exhibit substantial improvement in crack, impact, and fatigue resistance over conventional reinforcing steels.

Slide 7:

DESIGN OF SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM A simply supported beam is designed through limit state method using steel Fe – 415 and Nanosteel. Design using Grade of Concrete M20. Effective Span of beam = 8 m, Working Live load on beam = 30 kN/m, Effective cover =d’=50mm. Comparison of Design are given below :

Slide 8:

Percentage reduction of actual Cross-sectional area of Beam = 15.38% Percentage reduction of steel in Beam=37.5% Per meter weight of Beam designed by Fe-415 = 4875 N Per meter weight of Beam designed by Nanosteel = 4125 N Percentage saving in weight per meter length of Beam= 15.38 %

Slide 9:

DESIGN OF SHORT COLUMN A column is designed through limit state method using steel Fe – 415 & Nanosteel. Ultimate Axial Load = 3000 kN, Unsupported length = 3.25 m, Effective Length Lex = 3.0 and Ley = 2.75 m, Grade of Concrete M20 The comparison of design are given in below :

Slide 10:

Percentage reduction of actual Cross-sectional area of Column = 38.72 % Percentage reduction of steel in Column = 43.24 % Per meter weight of Column designed by Fe-415 = 6000 N Per meter weight of Column designed by Nanosteel = 5000 N Percentage saving in weight per meter length of Column = 16.67 %

Slide 11:

Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority (BLRA) used MMFX in pier piles, caps, and deck on military OCEAN development THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERDITY UDED MMFX FOR THEIR BUILDING FOUNDATION AND TANK WORK USA ARMY OF ENGINNERS USED MMFX-2 FOR BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION Florida Department ofTransportation chose MMFX FOR THE CAUSEWAY BRIDGE

Slide 12:

CONCLUSION Based on the above information that the column’s weight may be reduced by 16.67 % and the Beam’s weight is reduced by 15.38 %. Thus it is possible to reduce the weight of whole building by average of column and beam by 16.025 % and it will be high strength, high life period due to low corrosion of steel will be highly economical, low maintenance. Average percentage reduction of reinforcement steel = 40%. If the structure has low height then this will not show a very big saving of weight as well as economy, but if the structure is high rise then it will show lot of saving of materials, labour and economy. Due to light weight of structure and flexibility due to reinforcement it is able to sustain earthquake as well.
