Oral Stage According to Freud fixation at the oral stage could form the basis for obsessive eating and smoking. Freud stated oral-stage fixations are manifested as excessive smoking, continual oral stimulus eating , chewing objects (Weiten, 2008)

Food addiction and the Brain Food addiction deals with the brain stimuli Drug and Alcohol addiction is when the substance causes the addiction Binge eating is also a psychiatric disorder which originates in the brain Dopamine is the brain chemical that makes you feel good and want more of that food

What is food addiction?:

What is food addiction? - Overeating Eating more and more to achieve satisfaction Results in less and less satisfaction, so people eat more - Addiction to palatable foods such as salt, fat and sugar. Consuming a lot of these foods, one achieves satisfaction and will try to achieve the level each time. People continue to eat when they haven’t reached the satisfaction level

Signs of food addiction:

Signs of food addiction - Develop tolerance to certain foods and continue to eat because they aren’t f full Eat when they are not hungry Possible obesity Increase in physical activity due to overeating to keep weight off Keep indulging into certain foods even if you are not hungry Feeling ill after eating Not eating certain types of food for the fear of over indulging Go out of your way to obtain these foods

Food addiction- Disorders One of the most popular disorders is binge eating disorder. B inge eating disorder has been proposed as a new stand-alone This disorder characterized by compulsive overeating; in which people consume huge amounts of food while feeling out of control and powerless to stop. The symptoms usually begin in late to early adulthood, often after a major diet.

Obesity is overfatness with severe health effects. 13% obese rate of Americans in 1960 66% are overweight and one-third of Americans are obese today. 33% are overweight in American children today Over 70% of obese people have at least 1 health deficiency

Obesity Health consequences include high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, and even cancer, even though they have an intense desire to lose weight.

Social and Economic Cost Less often hired for a job Less often accepted to a college or university Obese people have to pay a higher health insurance rate and denied life insurance Have to purchase more clothes Have to buy more food than the average person American spend close to $50 billion a year on dietary produces with usually no significant result Being Overweight costs more money for transportation because of the weight(airplanes, buses, gas for car)

DSM - Food addiction:

DSM - Food addiction Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). DSM is usually associated with any health disorder. DSM recognizes eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia as mental disorders, with some severe impairments and serious adverse outcomes; but on the other hand does not recognize obesity despite its shocking medical and psychological consequences. Food addiction however fits the criteria of maladaptive behavior defined by our book as: people are judged to have a psychological disorder because their everyday adaptive behavior is impaired (Weiten, 2008).

“Just Say No”:

“Just S ay No” The “just say no” approach is one of the hardest for food addicts to cope with This goes the same for heroin or an alcoholic, its just not that simple No one wants to be addicted to any certain thing. The behaviors that make use addicted to something, arise out of primitive neurochemical reward centers in the brain that override normal willpower and overwhelm our ordinary biological signals that control hunger.

Support groups :

Support groups Support groups similar to AA do exist for people who are addicted to food. Food Addicts Anonymous involves a twelve step program which helps the person abstain from addictive and triggering foods. A food plan is created to aid in lifestyle changes but not to act as a diet. Other support groups do exist, including online groups which are growing in popularity.

Cognitive Therapy :

Cognitive Therapy Cognitive therapy, also called cognitive-behavioral therapy, focuses on how we think about things and what affects us emotionally. This form of therapy is used often with drug addicts. Food addicts, being similar to drug addicts, also benefit from this form of therapy. The type of situations and any negative thoughts surrounded that situation are identified in order to pin point when the eating occurs. The therapist works with the food addict to work through thoughts and feelings that may trigger overeating (Weiten, 2008)

Cognitive Therapy :

Cognitive Therapy Cognitive therapy is used in specific strategies to correct habitual thinking errors that underlie various types of disorders. In cognitive disorders there are four different steps, first the person will blame their self on personal inadequacies without considering certain circumstances. Second they will focus mainly on negative events going on in their life. Third they will make projections about the future, fourth and finally they will draw negative conclusion about their personal lives, based on insignificant events. This come and hand with food addicts, because they blame no one but themselves for what is happening to them

Exercise :

Exercise Like a drug addict, food addicts may experience a high from eating. Exercise is similar in which a euphoric feeling is experienced from exercising. Exercising while trying to fight a food addiction, and while doing another treatment, is very helpful because a high from exercise can replace the high felt from eating.

Trigger Foods :

Trigger Foods Certain foods may trigger a person into overeating. Foods filled with sugar, salt, fat and carbs are very common trigger foods. Identifying which foods specify trigger eating is one of the first steps in recovery. Once the foods are pin pointed, it’s important to try and reduce the amount of trigger foods. Completely cutting out trigger foods from an addict’s diet usually fails. Reducing and creating a balanced diet is more beneficial.

Journaling :

Journaling Writing down thoughts and feelings has been found to be very therapeutic. Many treatments for addiction and other disorders involve keeping a journal. A journal is a way to release any emotions instead of keeping them pent up. Journaling and working through the journal with a therapist will help resolve any underlying problems and triggers.

Medication:

Medication Medication is not always used during treatment but it can be helpful. Certain medication may be used to reduce cravings and prevent relapse .
