He was born in 742 in a place that is still unknown. : Charlemagne could not write, He attempted to teach himself how to, in his later ages, but he failed to do so. : However, Charlemagne could speak old Teutonic and literary Latin, and he even understood Greek. : When Charlemagne’s father, Pippin, died he passed on the kingdom to his sons. : But there was a problem, there was two kings but only one kingdom. So Pippin divided the kingdom equally. : Although, shortly after Carloman, Charlemagne’s brother died, leaving the entire kingdom under Charlemagne’s rule. : After obtaining the kingdom, and becoming the sole ruler of it Charlemagne was asked by Pope Hadrian II if he would help in the battle against Lombard Desiderius, who was invading the Papal States. : Charlemagne took over Bavaria which brought all of the territory of the Germanic tribes in one large political unit. : Charlemagne launched an educational plan which required Bishops and abbots to open up schools for the children, near the churched : Charlemagne conducted a series of campaigns which were against the Avars, in which is now present say Austria and Hungary. : Charlemagne ordered the construction of his cathedral, which was located in Aachen. : In 814 Charlemagne died in his kingdom, located in Aachen.
