Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: Altamonte Springs Special Population Activities Colleen Schmook Aline Zghayyar cschmook@knights.ucf.edu alinez@knights.ucf.edu EEX4242 0M01 April 10 th 2011Slide 2: Altamonte Springs Special Community Services The Altamonte Springs Advisory Board for the Disabled, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization that functions out of the Special Community Services Division within the City of Altamonte Springs Department of Leisure Services.Slide 3: Altamonte Springs Special Community Services The City of Altamonte Springs Special Community Services and the Advisory Board for the Disabled, Inc. have provided social activities for the past 25 years at a minimal cost to the mentally and physically challenged population in Altamonte Springs and surrounding communities. These activities include: weekly bowling, Karaoke, Thursday night outings, monthly dances, dancing lessons, and Saturday field trips. Approximately 50 community members are served.Slide 4: These activities are provided for participants with a variety of disabilities including Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, and other developmental delays. Requirements include: Ages 13 and over (with exception to select specially designed youth programs) Able to function in a group structure (1 staff member/volunteer per 5 participants) Capable of participation in group activities Altamonte Springs Special Community ServicesSlide 5: BowlingSlide 6: Cooking ClassSlide 7: Nightbird DancesSlide 8: Perceptions of Differences Nervous Unsure H esitant Relieved Fulfilling ComfortableSlide 9: Connections to Course This project was completed for Teaching Exceptional Students in Secondary Settings, EEX 4242. Our experiences helped us learn to differentiate tasks based on ability, while still providing participants with fulfilling activities. We also implemented the use of technology to keep track of participant’s progress in bowling. We used multiple means of engagement through out the activities, such as modeling, hands on activities and applying universal design principles.Slide 10: Civic Engagement Civic engagement is critical for many programs in our society, and specifically the Altamonte Springs special population services, because without volunteer hours such programs will cease to exist. Service learning is a good way to inform students on how to get involved in their communities. It is especially important for pre-teachers to participate in service learning. Service learning provides pre-teachers with opportunities to practice the theories they learn in the classroom.Slide 11: Final Thoughts "Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses." - Alphonse Karr "Disability is not a brave struggle or ‘courage in the face of adversity.’ Disability is an art.
