Slide 1:

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI: HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY SUMMARY McMurray Family Reading Challenge September to June

Slide 2:

Jerusalem – 600BC

Slide 3:

God commands Lehi to take his family into the wilderness because Jerusalem was going to be destroyed. The people were rejecting the prophets. Lehi obeyed the Lord and took his family into the wilderness. This included his wife, Sariah, and his sons Laman, Lemuel, Nephi, and Sam. Lehi sent his sons back to Jerusalem to obtain the record of their ancestors and commandments of God contained in the brass plates. Laban had the plates and Nephi was commanded to slay Laban in order to obtain the plates before his family left to the Promised Land. “It is better that one man should perish than a nation should dwindle in unbelief.”

Slide 4:

Lehi sends his son back to Jerusalem a second time to bring Ishmael and his family along for the trip. Ishmael’s daughters marry Lehi’s sons. Back at camp, Lehi has a vision about the Tree of Life. He teaches his children that in order to be together forever, they need to be obedient and keep the commandments of the Lord.

Slide 5:

NEPHI’S VISION

Slide 6:

Liahona As the family travels in the wilderness, Ishmael dies in a place called Neum. The family hunts for food to survive and Nephi’s bow breaks. His brothers are angry and they decide to kill him until the voice of the Lord commands them not to. Nephi is able to fix the bow and find food.

Slide 7:

The Lord commands Nephi to build a ship to sail to the Land of Promise. His brothers murmur and complain until Nephi shocks them. They help him finish the boat and the family sails to the Land of Promise that they call Bountiful.

Slide 8:

While on the trip across the ocean, Laman and Lemuel and their families begin singing and dancing and partying, forgetting that the Lord is delivering them to safety. They become angry with their parents and with Nephi and tie him up until the ship nearly sinks. Once they release Nephi, his prayers and faith almost immediately calm the waters and the Liahona begins working again directing the ship to the Land of Promise. After arriving in the Land of Promise, the family begins farming and they find fertile land and lots of wildlife. The Lord commands Nephi to make two sets of plates, large and small. At the end of 1 st Nephi, he quotes Isaiah to show that the prophets testified of Christ.
