Why become computer fluent? :Computers are here to stay Every walk of life The Internet is probably the most significant development, that brought it to the masses World Wide Web E-mail Social Networking A necessary skill-set for all to learn Why become computer fluent?


A Warning...... :In February 2007, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, noted that digital literacy is a major factor in economic success for both individuals and communities and warned that people lacking the necessary skills will slip to the margins of society. Success stories? :A Graduate in Computer Science had to be taught how to use MS Word and Excel when he entered the workforce. A Lecturer in Computer Science failed Module 1 and thought the ICDL basic syllabus in MS Word was the advanced syllabus. Graduates in Hotel and Restaurant Management were found to be working as waitresses in Singapore, not Managers. Very few Filipino Degrees are internationally portable Success stories?


What is it ??? :Nothing to do with driving a car !! Basic, practical IT skills that employers need. What is it ???


How ? - Why ? :Started in Europe 1990, UK started 1997 Recognised need for basic IT skills “Left my typewriter on Friday night, Monday I found a TV on my desk!” Member of Gaymer Group Typing Pool 1993 Employer needs, employer recognised How ? - Why ?


Where is it ?? :Over 150 countries world-wide Over 7,500,000 people 37 Asian countries – 36 are very active USA 2005 China May 2007 – by August 2007, over 2000 entered the annual international competition! All Bejing 2008 Olympics Volunteers hold it now, a FURTHER 500,000! Fact: China is rapidly becoming the #1 English speaking country in the world Where is it ??

Slide 20:features Every ICDL product: is based on a single, internationally developed and agreed Syllabus; is being periodically updated; is vendor independent; has a “Pass” or “Fail” mentality, i.e. scores do not matter - the candidate either has or does not have the required skills; can be tested, subject to availability, on any language, software application and in any ICDL Approved Test Centre in the world.

GMA........


Philippine need :Graduate skills do not meet employer needs (TESDA) No National IT Standard - Employers have no IT bench-mark – for existing or new staff. Large scale computer penetration by multi-nationals – many more administrative roles than programming roles Only 14% achieve Degrees (TESDA) Only 1 in 4 graduates lands a job (NSO) 86% do not therefore achieve tertiary qualifications Many Filipinos go abroad to work – will be expected to be ICT literate – and be expected to prove it! Philippine need
