Rome started as a single city in Italy:

Rome started as a single city in Italy It rebelled against the Etruscans in 509 BCE and became a Republic. Republic=government by elected representatives Democracy=direct government by all citizens

Rome began to conquer other places. By the 1st century BCE, Rome controlled most of the Mediterranean.:

Roman generals started to fight among themselves. Julius Caesar came out on top and made himself “Dictator for life.” His nephew Augustus made himself emperor.

The early empire was prosperous, peaceful, and good at winning people over. Romans built roads, aqueducts and temples all over their empire.

Several emperors tried. Diocletian split the empire in two. Constantine converted it to Christianity. Neither helped much.

In 410, Alaric I, King of the Visigoths, marched into Rome and sacked it. The Western Empire was over.
