Introduction :

Introduction PDA stands for “Personal Digital Assistant”. PDA is a handheld computer with the capabilities of a mobile phone, portable media player, portable web browsing device etc…. A personal digital assistant (PDA), also known as a palmtop computer, is a mobile device which functions as a Personal Information Manager(PIM). 2

HISTORY OF PDA:

HISTORY OF PDA 4 In 1996, Nokia introduced the first mobile phone with full PDA functionality, the 9000 Communicator, which has since grown to become the world's best-selling PDA and which spawned a category of phones called the smartphone.

Features of the pda :

Features of the pda A typical PDA will have features such as: Touch screen/Soft Keys/Keypad. Memory card slot. Wired/wireless connectivity. Synchronization. 6

Slide 7:

The touch screen is required for inputting the text data using the stylus tool. 7

Memory cards:

Memory cards Memory plays a major role in the PDA as it is used to store the data when it is used as a portable computer. In addition to the existing memory, memory cards boost the capacity of the PDA. 8

Connectivity:

Connectivity Connectivity to the PDA could be via wired i.e serial ports or other proprietary format, many today connect via USB cable. Most modern PDAs have Bluetooth wireless connectivity, Many mid-range and superior PDAs have Wi-Fi/WLAN/ 802.11 connectivity. 9

SYNCHRONIZATION:

10 SYNCHRONIZATION PDAs are designed to complement your PC, they need to work with the same information in both places. An important function of PDAs is synchronizing data with a PC. The advantage of synchronization is that you always have a backup copy of your data, which can be a lifesaver if your PDA is broken, stolen.

Uses of PDAs:

Uses of PDAs PDA s are used to store information that can be accessed at any time and anywhere. Navigation purpose. Educational uses. Sports uses. Business purpose. Personal use. . 12

Navigation:

Navigation PDAs come with differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to provide real time navigation. Not only can they keep your schedule on track, but they can also prevent you from getting off track as you drive to various destinations with its navigation capabilities--a real time-saver.

Sporting uses:

17 Sporting uses Music enthusiasts can listen to music during Driving. Road Rally enthusiasts can use PDA software for calculating distance, speed, time, and GPS navigation.

Business Purpose:

Business Purpose Store contact information (names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses). Make to-do lists Take notes Track appointments (date book, calendar) Remind you of appointments (clock, alarm functions) Perform calculations 18

Personal Uses:

Personal Uses The latest PDAs come with a built-in Camera used for capturing images and for video recording. PDAs today come along with Media Player and voice memo recording. 19

Working of PDA’s:

Working of PDA’s Micro processors . The Operating system . Batteries . LCD Display. Input Device .

Microprocessors :

Microprocessors Like standard desktop and laptop computers, PDAs are powered by microprocessors. The microprocessor is the brain of the PDA and coordinates all of the PDA's functions according to programmed instructions. 21

The Operating System:

The Operating System The operating system contains the pre-programmed instructions that tell the microprocessor what to do. There are many other operating systems, some designed solely for Smartphones. Example: Palm, Windows Mobile, iOS, Android. 22

Batteries:

Batteries PDAs are powered by batteries. Some models use alkaline (AAA) batteries, while others use rechargeable batteries(lithium) The battery life depends on what kind of PDA one has and what it is used for. 23

LCD Display:

LCD Display Unlike the LCD screens for desktop or laptop computers, which are used solely as output devices, PDAs use their screens for output and input. The LCD screens of PDAs are smaller than laptop screens, but vary in size. 24

Input Device:

Input Device Palm-sized computers use a stylus and touch screen exclusively in combination with a handwriting recognition program . Eventually, most PDAs will incorporate voice recognition technology, where one speaks into a built-in microphone while software converts voice waves into data. 25

The Future of PDAs :

The Future of PDAs Traditional PDAs appear to be less popular than they have been in the past. Today the vast majority of all PDAs are smartphones, selling over 150 million units per year.

conclusion:

conclusion The PDA’s make the life simpler for a human being, with its user friendly functions. It also is evident that this makes human being more vulnerable to dependency towards the technology. 30
