Some PDAs are now compatible with micro SD cards, which are physically much smaller than standard SD cards. 3. Wireless connectivity : 3. Wireless connectivity Most modern PDAs have Bluetooth wireless connectivity, an increasingly popular tool for mobile devices. It can be used to connect keyboards, headsets, GPS and many other accessories, as well as sending files between PDAs. connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots or wireless networks. 4. Synchronization : 4. Synchronization An important function of PDAs is synchronizing data with a PC. The data synchronization ensures that the PDA has an accurate list of contacts, appointments and e-mail, allowing users to access the same information on the PDA as the host computer. The synchronizing also prevents the loss of information stored on the device in case it is lost, stolen, or destroyed. Slide 11: 5. Other Features Most of the P.D.A. comes with camera. Slide 12: Another one of the best feature is that it is slim and light weight which differs it from bulky laptops. For programmers Microsoft Visual Studio and Sun Java provide programming tools for developing survey instruments on the handheld. These development tools allow for integration with SQL databases that are stored on the handheld and can be synchronized with a desktop/server based database. PDAs are used by glider pilots for pre-flight planning and to assist navigation in cross-country competitions. They are linked to a GPS to produce moving-map displays showing the tracks to turn-points, airspace hazards and other tactical information. 5. Sporting uses 6. Educational uses PDAs and handheld devices are commonly allowed in the classroom for digital note taking. Students can spell-check, modify, and amend their class notes or e-notes. Some educators distribute course material through the use of the internet connectivity or infrared file sharing functions of the PDA. Textbook publishers have begun to release e-books, or electronic textbooks, which can be uploaded directly to a PDA, reducing the number of textbooks students must carry. Slide 17: 7. Dictionary A P.D.A. with additional software can easily double as a pocket sized dictionary. It can translate words to hundreds of languages and can even speak those foreign words for you (speech recognition ). 8. Music and movies A P.D.A. though has some advanced features that you can’t find in every mobile phone or mp3 player out there. These include advanced library view, a voice recorder, equalizers, advanced visualization and sound manipulation. There are many portable movie players out there. Most of them have a 7“ screen and a DVD reader. They can play most movie formats and have outputs for TV’s and speakers. Disadvantages : Disadvantages Clucky, difficult to carry or put in pocket. Need to constantly recharge must travel with recharging cord or cradle. Most PDA’s have incompatible formats for transferring information between unlike brands. Easily broken if droped. Screens easily scratched if used a lot. Easy to lose stylus for palms. Limited video playback capability – No flash support. Cameras don’t zoom or have flash. Multi tasking can cause accidents- eg. Texting while driving or walking or biking may cause accidents.
