E-learning and Generation :

E-learning and Generation Dayna Lloyd, Sara Cardiel & Stacey Cheung

Problem Statement & Significance :

Problem Statement & Significance How will research on this topic improve practice, solve a problem, or advance knowledge in HRD or other area(s)? - Based on our research we want to determine if it is beneficial to design e-learning around generational differences.

Problem Statement & Significance :

Problem Statement & Significance Why is it relevant now that you research this topic? It is relevant because there are now 4 different generations in the workforce. Generation Y members are 75 million strong and are a significant amount of gen y-ers are currently entering the workforce.

Problem Statement & Significance :

Problem Statement & Significance What is your personal interest in this topic? - As students and part of generation Y e-learning is part of our lives either in school or at work. It is important to understand generational differences in order to capitalize on each generation’s strengths.

Problem Statement & Significance :

Problem Statement & Significance What contributions to practice, theoretical development, or other research will this proposal make? This research could help organizations determine if generational e-learning is a beneficial tool for their workforce. It could also help aid in the design of such generational e-learning courses. The 4 different generations in the workforce can sometimes cause conflict and misunderstandings. Understanding how each generation learns and operates in the workforce can foster respectful working relationships and could also lead to improved performance.

Problem Statement & Significance :

Problem Statement & Significance What contributions to practice, theoretical development, or other research will this proposal make? (Cont.) After reviewing the literature, we have determined that there hasn’t been a significant amount of research conducted on generational training in the workplace. Connectivism theory is a new learning theory for the digital age and We believe our research could further advance connectivism theory or help develop a new similar theory about the current and emerging technologies.

Definitions :

Definitions E-Learning refers to the use of Internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance. There are varying dates for each generation, but for the focus of this paper the following generations fall under these years: Traditionalists: born between 1922-1945 Boomers: born between 1946-1964 Generation X: born between 1965-1979 Generation Y: born between 1980 to 1994

Purpose Statement :

Purpose Statement The purpose of this study is to determine if e-learning should bedesigned around generational differences

Research Question :

Research Question Will customizing e-learning to multiple generations effect content retention?

Major Study Variables :

Major Study Variables Since we want to determine if e-learning should be designed around generational differences, our major study variables will be: Independent variables The 4 generations in the workforce (traditionalist, baby boomers, generation x, & generation y) Dependent variables Content retention in an e-learning course
