Lesson 2 :

Lesson 2 Equivalent Fractions

Slide 2:

Fractions that name the same amount are called equivalent fractions. What is an equivalent fraction? 2/4 4/8 1/2 As you can see in the pictures, 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 all name the same amount

Slide 3:

Some fractions can be reduced to a smaller (and equivalent) fraction. This is called finding the simplest form of the fraction. What is simplest form? Divide the numerator and denominator by the same number. Remember: whatever you do to the top number, you must do the same to the bottom number. 4 8 ÷ 4 = ÷ 4 = 1 2 8 10 ÷ 2 = ÷ 2 = 4 5

Slide 4:

Sometimes you won’t get the simplest form on the first try. Keep dividing until 1 is the only number that can be divided into the numerator and denominator. 9 18 ÷ 3 = ÷ 3 = 3 6 ÷ 3 = ÷ 3 = 1 2
